Rockville Centre, N.Y. - Tied at 50 headed into the final 10 minutes of play, the women's basketball team put together 22 points in the fourth quarter to come out on top of the Dolphins of Staten Island, 72-66. The win sets Molloy at 7-13 on the season and 5-4 in East Coast Conference play, good for third place headed into the final month of the regular season.
How it Happened
- The Dolphins were off to a hot start with a 13-0 run to begin the contest.
- Seven points from senior Sophia Yearwood and two from senior Colleen McCullagh brought the Lions back into it at 13-9 after seven minutes of play.
- Yearwood added two more three-pointers before senior Rosa Rizzitelli finished the frame with a layup to bring Molloy within one, 18-17.
- The score would be tied three times in the second quarter, but Staten Island would shoot 50 percent from the field in the frame to pull ahead by as much as 10, 40-30, at the break.
- The inverse would be true for the third quarter, with the Lions shooting nearly 54 percent in the third to change the tides. The Dolphins would net the first points of the third quarter, but the next nine belonged to the Lions to come within one possession.
- Trailing by five with one minute left in the quarter, a three-pointer from sophomore Grace Trotta paired with a layup from McCullagh tied the game headed into the final 10 minutes.
- The run bled into the fourth quarter with four points from Yearwood, three from Rizzitelli, and one from Trotta to put Molloy ahead by six, 58-52.
- CSI would come within one twice, including 66-65 with 3:24 on the clock before a 6-1 run sealed the contest for the Lions.
Top Performances
- Yearwood's career-high 25 points led all scorers, going 10-of-14 from the field and 4-of-8 from long distance. The senior added four steals, four rebounds, and two assists.
- McCullagh followed with 20 points, adding eight rebounds.
- Rizzitelli led with 12 rebounds, adding 18 points and nine assists to just miss a triple-double.
- Trotta pulled down a career-high six rebounds to go with seven points.
- Sophomore Emma Poland had two blocks while freshman Sharmeela Ugbogbo led with three.
