Weakly Sets Single-Game Blocks Record; Men’s Basketball Tops Mercy, 81-56

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – Junior Jared Weakly threw himself a block party Saturday afternoon, totaling nine denials to set a single-game record in Molloy men's basketball 81-56 victory over Mercy on Bob Houlihan Court. Following the game, the Lions improve to 4-14 overall and 4-4 in East Coast Conference play, while the Mavericks move to 2-16 overall and 2-7 in league play.
 
How it Happened
  • After the Mavericks jumped out to an early 5-3 lead, the Lions put together a 10-0 run shooting a perfect five-for-five from the field to take a 13-5 lead 3:03 into the contest.
  • During the run, sophomore Dylan Kopp collected six points on the back of three lay ups while the cardinal and white forced two turnovers.
  • Molloy would take a double-digit lead with through the next four minutes of action, but Mercy was able to cut it back to six, 23-17, midway through the opening stanza.
  • The next three minutes of action would turn into an offensive struggle as neither team was able to record a bucket, keeping the contest a six-point game.
  • The cardinal and white closed the first half outscoring the visitors 16-8 on the back of 64 percent shooting to take a 39-25 lead into halftime.
  • Molloy controlled the first 6:19 of the second half maintaining a multi-possession lead, but Mercy continued to climb back and cut the deficit to nine, 45-36, with 13:41 to play.
  • Through the next 4:45 of action, the home team built its lead back into double-digits behind a 12-4 rally. The run saw four Lions find the scoresheet with junior Chris Stokel, freshman Chase Timberlake, Kopp, and Weakly all contribute to open a 17-point lead, 57-40.
  • The Mavericks cut the deficit down to 15, 57-42, after a pair of free throws from TJ Holloway, but that is as close as they would come. The Lions would go on to shoot 7-of-13 from the floor in final 8:23 of the game and hold Mercy to 27 percent shooting to close out the victory, 81-56.
Top Performances
  • Weakly collected a double-double totaling 21 points and 13 rebounds on top of nine blocks.
  • Kopp collected a career-high 25 points on 50 percent shooting.
  • Stokel stuffed the stat sheet tallying 16 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists.
  • Timberlake rounded out the top scorers netting 10 points and grabbing eight rebounds.
