Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy women's soccer team tangled with the 17
th-ranked Adelphi Panthers Saturday afternoon at the Rockville Centre Sports Complex. The Panthers topped the Lions, 2-1, moving the cardinal and white to 0-2 on the campaign, while Adelphi improved to 1-1.
The game was called in the 74
th minute due to weather.
How it Happened
- The first shot of the contest came in the fourth minute when freshman Jana Strait made an attempt that was saved by Adelphi goalkeeper Emily Aridas.
- 10 minutes later, after winning a corner kick, Adelphi found the back of the next when Kara Diblasio punched it in to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
- The contest would continue without a recorded shot through the 28th minute, as both back lines of defense hunkered down.
- In the 29th minute the Lions broke through. Sophomore Marissa Tonic took a corner kick and found the head of Strait who knocked it in to knot the contest at one.
- The road team looked to regain its lead four minutes later when Julia DeMicco split the defense for a shot, but junior goalkeeper Elyse Muñoz denied the opportunity.
- Sophomore Meghan Wetzel lined up a free kick in the 34th minute, but her attempt would be saved from 30 yards out.
- The final two chances of the first half came from Adelphi's Kayleigh Goodrich in the 37th and 44th minute. The first attempt came off a screaming shot on a free kick that rang off the crossbar and the final attempt was saved by Muñoz, sending the contest into halftime tied, 1-1.
- Coming into the second half, forward senior Olivia Ingenito sought to give the Lions the lead, but her attempt from inside the area was denied by Aridas in the 49th minute.
- Adelphi would take the lead, 2-1, in the 52nd minute after Gia Mandile fired a shot from 25 yards that tucked it into the far post.
- Molloy ramped up the intensity in search of the contest's tying goal. Strait generated three chanced in the 58th, 61st, and 64th minute, but all three attempts did not land on target.
- The best opportunity for the cardinal and white came in the 69th minute. Junior Isabella Muro streaked into the right hand side of the 18-yard box and fired a shot that went wide and was followed by sophomore Sarah Cavallo, who put a shot high.
- The contest would end in the 74th minute with the Panthers clinching the victory, 2-1, after the game was delayed and then called due to weather.
Top Performances
- Strait netted her first goal of the season while totaling seven shots with two on target.
- Ingenito and Wetzel collected a shot on goal apiece.
- In goal, Muñoz made two saves.
