Pleasantville, N.Y. – The Molloy women's soccer team picked up its third straight victory Tuesday evening defeating the Pace University Setters, 2-1, at Northwell Stadium. The Lions improve to 5-2-2 on the campaign, while the Setters move to 3-4.
How it Happened
- Pace looked for an opening tally in the first 1:06 with a shot from Andrea Flores that went wide.
- The Lions first two chances came in the ninth and 11th minute, when senior Olivia Ingenito put together a pair of shots that went high.
- Over the next 12 minutes of action the Setters got into a rhythm controlling possession and totaling three shots, but all three missed target.
- The 31st minute saw Molloy tally its first shot on goal when junior Isabella Muro created space for a shot that would be saved by Pace goalkeeper Anna Fiore.
- In the 35th minute, sophomore Bella Juliano sent in a corner kick that found the head of sophomore Marissa Tonic who headed into the net to get the Lions on the board, 1-0.
- With 31 seconds to go in the first half Pace defender Allison Carr looked to tie the game, but junior goalkeeper Elyse Muñoz made the save sending the contest into halftime with Molloy in front, 1-0.
- Six minutes into the second half Muro sought to give the Lions a two-goal lead, but her shot would be denied by Fiore.
- In the 58th minute, Pace knotted the contest at one after a free kick was converted at the far post.
- 43 seconds later the home team looked to flip momentum and take the lead, but Muñoz made a huge save to keep the game tied.
- The contest turned into a back-and-forth game as both sides battled for possession seeking a go-ahead goal.
- The Lions cashed in in the 74th minute. Freshman Rebecca Petrellese found Ingenito on the right side of the 18-yard box, spun and fired a shot to the far post that found its way into the net to reclaim the Molloy lead, 2-1.
- The cardinal and white looked to add an insurance goal in the 83rd minute when sophomore Jana Strait created space for a shot, but Fiore denied the chance.
- 26 seconds later, Pace forward Aca Viebrock looked for the game tying goal, but her shot would go wide of target.
- That opportunity would be the final chance of the contest, as the Lions would hold the Setters without a shot attempt in the final seven minutes and go on to close the victory, 2-1.
