Women’s Soccer Picks Up First Conference Win At Staten Island

Staten Island, N.Y. – With a season-high four goals, the Molloy women's soccer team earned its first win East Coast Conference play topping the Dolphins of Staten Island, 4-0, Wednesday afternoon at Dolphins Soccer Park. The Lions improve to 3-2-2 overall and 1-0-1 in ECC play, while the Dolphins move to 1-4-1 overall and 0-2 in league play.
 
How it Happened
  • The Lions pressure started in the third minute, when junior Isabella Muro created space for a shot that hit the right post. 1:08 later, freshman Gianna Zawol continued the attack getting a chance to score, but her shot was sent high.
  • In the 12th minute, sophomore Jana Strait had an opportunity inside the six-yard box, but her shot was blocked to set up a Molloy corner.
  • Following a short quick corner, graduate student Emma Beattie fired a shot from the right side that found the back of the net, just out of the reach of Staten Island goalkeeper Brianna Dore to put Molloy in front, 1-0.
  • The cardinal and white continued to seek for the net as Beattie, Muro, and Zawol would collect chances over the next eight minutes of action, but none would land on target.
  • The 28th minute saw senior Olivia Ingenito look to extend the Lions lead, but her shot would be denied by Dore.
  • Staten Island found a chance at goal after a ball was played into the area in the 33rd minute, but the attempt would be blocked by the Lions defense.
  • Over the next 1:40 of game time, Ingenito put together two shots and freshman Rebecca Petrellese had a go at the goal, but all three shots would be saved keeping the game a one goal contest.
  • The Dolphins generated its first shot on goal in the 41st minute, but junior goalkeeper Elyse Muñoz denied the chance.
  • With 32 seconds remaining in the first half, Ingenito was finally able to break through, sneaking a shot past Dore to put Molloy ahead, 2-0, going into halftime.
  • Ingenito picked up where she left off, netting her second goal of the contest five minutes into the second half off a feed from Muro to extend the lead, 3-0.
  • 2:11 later, sophomore Bella Juliano sent in a corner and found junior Madison Keenan for a perfect header to add on to the lead, 4-0.
  • Molloy would hold the Dolphins to three shots for the remainder of the contest, with Muñoz making two more saves as the Lions would go on to seal the victory, 4-0.
Top Performances
  • Ingenito put together her second multi-goal game of the season while leading with seven shots with five coming on goal.
  • Beattie netted her first career goal as a Lion and Keenan tallied her first goal of the season.
  • Muro totaled two assist while Juliano handed out one assist.
  • In goal, Muñoz made three saves to pick up her third shutout of the season.
