Women’s Soccer Comes From Behind To Draw Mercy, 2-2

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – After falling behind, 2-0, with 28 minutes to play, the Molloy women's soccer team used two second half goals to come to a 2-2 draw with the Mavericks of Mercy Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field. As a result, the Lions move to 2-2-2 overall and 0-0-1 in East Coast Conference play, while the Mavericks move to 4-0-1 overall and 0-0-1 in league play.
 
How it Happened
  • After five minutes of back-and-forth play, Mercy put together two shots in a 45 second span, but junior Elyse Muñoz made a pair of saves in the early goings.
  • Three minutes later, the Mavericks generated another chance from Ancksu Dixon, but Muñoz was there to deny the chance.
  • The pressure would continue with another shot in the 10th minute from the Mavericks, but once again Muñoz stood strong making the save.
  • 15 minutes would go by without a recorded shot on goal until the Mavericks broke through in the 27th minute after Camila Salvador found the back of the net to put the home team ahead, 1-0.
  • The Lions recorded its first shot of the contest in the 28th minute when senior Mikaela Barriga sent a shot high.
  • The cardinal and whites offense began to see consistent pressure as the half went on, sophomore Marissa Tonic looked for a chance to score in the 30th minute, but her shot missed left of target.
  • Mercy would have one last chance to extend its lead in the 44th minute, but Muñoz made a save sending the contest into halftime with Mercy ahead, 1-0.
  • 1:02 into the second half., Mercy's Ella Gallino belted a shot that hit off the crossbar.
  • Sophomore Jana Strait generated two shots in the 52nd and 56th minute, but both missed target.
  • In the 63rd minute, Mercy added to its lead, 2-0, after Dixon was able to beat Muñoz.
  • The two-goal lead was short lived as the Lions broke through to cut the deficit in half, 2-1, 1:03 later after freshman Gianna Zawol found junior Isabella Muro off a throw in with Muro burying the goal with her left foot.
  • In the 70th minute, Strait chase a through ball into the box and was fouled inside the 18, drawing a penalty kick.
  • Strait stepped to the spot and tucked the attempt into the bottom left corner to knot the contest at two.
  • The game turned into a defensive battle over the final 20 minutes with only one shot for the remainder of the game.
  • Mavericks forward Gracie DiPalo created space in search of the game-winner, but Muñoz made one last save, securing the 2-2 draw. 
Top Performances
  • Muro netted her first goal of the season.
  • Strait tallied her second goal of the season with her first career PK goal while totaling three shots.
  • Zawol dished out her first career assist.
  • In goal, Muñoz made a season-high seven saves.

The cardinal and white continue East Coast Conference play Wednesday, September 24 with a road contest at Staten Island. The contest is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
