Upset! Women’s Soccer Stuns No. 7 Franklin Pierce

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – For the first time in program history the Molloy women's soccer defeated a team ranked in the top-10, taking down the seventh-ranked Franklin Pierce Ravens, 3-1, Wednesday evening at John A. Darcy Field. Molloy has now collected a point in each of its last three contests improving to 2-2-1 on the season, while Franklin Pierce moves to 3-1.

How it Happened
  • The contest began with a feeling out period as both teams mustered one shot apiece in the opening 10 minutes.
  • In the 12th minute after a misplayed ball by Ravens goalie Jess LaCroix, freshman Rebecca Petrellese found senior Olivia Ingenito who launched the ball over the head of LaCroix into the net to put Molloy in front, 1-0.
  • The first shot on goal for Franklin Pierce came in the 26th minute when Lindsey Pierce looked for the equalizer, but junior goalkeeper Elyse Muñoz made the save.
  • 10 minutes later, sophomore Jana Strait created space to fire a shot, but her attempt would be denied.
  • With 3:08 remaining in the first half the Lions capitalized on a corner kick. Sophomore Marissa Tonic sent in the swinging corner, connected with freshman Angela Rodriguez at the back post. Rodriguez headed it to the left post and found freshman Gianna Zawol who headed it into the back of the net to give the home team a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
  • The Ravens came flying into the second half, putting together three corners and three shots in the first six minutes. Two of the three shots were saved by Muñoz keeping the contest at bay.
  • Franklin Pierce cracked the scoreboard in the 58th minute, after Jenni Huttunen fired a shot from 25 yards out and tucked it into the far post to bring the contest within one, 2-1.
  • Muñoz would be tested once again two minutes later. Franklin Pierce forward Grace Martin snuck behind the back line for a break away, but Muñoz aggressively off her line made a kick save to keep Molloy in front.
  • In the 64th minute, sophomore Sarah Cavallo won a 50-50 ball, created space and fired a shot from 35 yards away that beat LaCroix to regain the Lions two-goal lead, 3-1.
  • 13 minutes would go by until the road team had its next chance. Huttunen looked for her second tally, but Muñoz would spoil the chance and make the save.
  • The final scoring chance of the contest came from the visitors in the 88th minute, but the shot would go wide securing the upset victory for the Lions, 3-1.
