Volleyball Tops Bridgeport, 3-1

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The volleyball team continued a seven-game home stretch to open the 2025 season with a 3-1 victory over the University of Bridgeport. The win sets the Lions at 4-1 on the season while UB falls to 0-2.

How it Happened
  • The Lions started the evening on a 5-1 run that saw two kills from senior Teresa Moulder, and one each from junior Erin Stanley and sophomore Isabella Rios.
  • The Purple Knights would tie the game, 6-6, before three-straight points regained the lead for the home team.
  • Molloy remained ahead through the rest of the set, finishing the set with back-to-back kills from Stanley and Moulder.
  • It was the visitors' turn for an early lead in set two, jumping ahead 11-4. 
  • The Lions would take seven of eight later to come within one, 12-11. The run featured two kills from senior Ilaria Micol Chiericati.
  • Trailing 15-12, another run of six points, including two aces from graduate student Julia Zalta, put Molloy ahead, 18-15. 
  • A kill from freshman Haven Trechter gave the Lions the 2-0 set victory.
  • A back-and-forth start to the third set finally played out in favor of the Purple Knights, stringing along four-straight points to lead 13-9.
  • Six of the next eight points would go to the Lions, tying the game at 15.
  • The teams would go on to be tied again at 22, and three-of-four points went to UB to keep the game going.
  • Molloy responded in the fourth set by winning seven of the opening nine points. 
  • The closest the visitors would come would be four points, 8-4, very early on before a .393 attacking percentage guided the Lions to the set and match victory.
Top Performances
  • Chiericati and Stanley both led with 12 kills. Chiericati hit at an impressive .524 on the evening with just one attack error and added three aces.
  • Zalta had a double-double with 25 assists and 11 kills, also adding three aces to go with eight digs.
  • 10 kills from both Moulder and Rios rounded out the top scorers for the Lions. Rios added nine digs and three aces while Moulder had three blocks and four digs. 
  • Junior Hayden Riddle tallied 24 assists to go with two aces and four digs. 
  • Senior Aria Miller led with a season-high 29 digs and added four assists and two aces.

Molloy will remain at Bob Houlihan Court on Friday (Sept. 12) as they face West Chester University of Pennsylvania at 6:00 p.m.
