Baseball Completes Four Game Sweep Of STAC

Before today's orginally scheduled contest, the Lions and Spartans concluded the seven inning game suspended in Pomona due to rain. The game picked up in the top of the seventh with the Lions at the plate with a runner on first and no outs. The Lions plated a pair of runners in the seventh following an error in center field to push in front, 6-4. Sophomore Thomas Charlwood was called upon to get the final three outs of the contest and did so in order to secure the save and the victory for the Lions.

Uniondale, N.Y. – The Molloy baseball team wrapped up its four-game set with the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College Sunday afternoon at Mitchel Field, coming away with an 8-3 victory to complete the sweep. Following the pair of victories, the Lions improve to 19-11 overall and 9-3 in East Coast Conference play, while the Spartans move to 7-23 overall and 4-8 in league play.

How it Happened
  • Molloy struck for two runs in the bottom of the first following an RBI double from graduate student Aidan Larkin and a sacrifice fly from senior Nicholas Dangello.
  • The Spartans looked to get on the board in the top of the second after back-to-back singles, but graduate student Ryan Hynes induced a fielders choice and an inning ending double play to get out of the jam.
  • The road team continued to threaten in the third putting runners on the corners with one away, but once again Hynes escaped ending the inning with a strike out and a ground out.
  • The cardinal and white broke the contest open with a four-run bottom of the fifth to increase the lead, 6-0. Junior Jeremy Taggart got it started with an RBI double into right center to score senior Thomas Lebrecht and junior Sean Welsh capped the inning, slugging a three-run home run over the left field fence.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas was able to break through in the top of the seventh when David Potenza connected for a three-run home run to cut the deficit in half, 6-3.
  • The Lions answered in the bottom of the frame. Welsh collected his second home run of the afternoon with a solo shot and Dagenllo singled home Larkin to increase the lead to five, 8-3.
  • Molloy would go on to retire the Spartans in order to get the final six house and secure the 8-3 victory.
