Uniondale, N.Y. - It would take nearly the entire contest for either team to break through a pitcher's duel this afternoon, but the baseball team fell to Queens College 2-1 from Mitchel Field. The loss sets the Lions at 19-12 on the season and 9-4 in East Coast Conference play while Queens improved to 10-18 (2-3 ECC).
How it Happened
- Both teams had earlier base runners via walks in the first inning.Â
- Senior Thomas Lebrecht legged out an infield single in the third inning before graduate student Aiden Larkin reached base on a perfectly placed bunt single in the fourth.
- Through six innings, however, neither team had a runner reach second base.
- A walk to sophomore Thomas Walker followed by an outfield single from junior Jack Coogan put runners on the corners in Molloy's first scoring chance of the game.
- Peter Nenadich ended his first inning of work with a strikeout to keep a run off the board.
- After sophomore James Sill had retired 20 consecutive batters, 10 of which via the strikeout, the Knights broke through in the top of the eighth inning.
- Back-to-back singles from Penn Sealey and Mike Vilardi set the table for an RBI ground out from Peter Bounougias to make it 1-0.
- Nick O'Connor would double to lead off the top of the ninth before moving to third on a sacrifice bunt. The center fielder broke for home when Matt Filip sent a ground ball to senior Patrick Sanchez at short stop. The throw home was not in time to get O'Connor, and the Knights' lead doubled to 2-0.
- Dagnello drew a walk early in the bottom of the ninth before advancing to second on a wild pitch from Nenadich to put a runner in scoring position for the Lions.
- Walker singled through the left side to put Dagnello just 90 feet from home and allowed the first baseman to score on a fielder's choice by Coogan, cutting the deficit in half.
- Nick Rodriguez would come in for the final two outs for the Knights to earn the save.
Top Performances
- Sill threw a complete game, fanning a career-high 13 batters. Allowing no hits through seven innings, he finished the afternoon with two earned runs on three hits and one walk.
- Larkin, Walker, Coogan, Lebrecht, and junior Jeremy Taggart recorded hits for the Lions with Coogan driving in the lone run.
