Baseball Takes Twin-Bill Against Queens

Uniondale, N.Y. – The Molloy baseball team took down the Knights of Queens College (7-4 and 8-4) to earn a pair of wins as part of today's doubleheader at Mitchel Field. The Lions improve to 21-12 overall and 11-4 in East Coast Conference play, while the Knights move to 10-20 overall and 2-5 in league play.

Game One: Molloy 7, Molloy 4
  • The Lions got on the board in the first following an RBI single from senior Patrick Sanchez.
  • Queens answered in the top of the second with an RBI single of its own to knot the contest at one.
  • Molloy fired back with two runs in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead, 3-2, after junior Sean Serrano and graduate student Aidan Larkin connected for back-to-back run scoring singles.
  • The Knights rallied off one run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to take a 4-3 lead.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the cardinal and white struck for a pair of runs after a run scored off a fielder's choice and senior Nicholas Dagnello knocked in sophomore Joe Burriesci to put the home team ahead, 5-4.
  • Junior Sean Welsh added an insurance run in the seventh, doubling home Burriesci and to extend the lead, 6-4.
  • In the top of the eighth, Queens threated putting runners on first and second with no outs on the board, but the Lions would find a way out of it. Junior Jeremy Taggart fired down to second to begin a 2-6-5 pick off to get the first out and then sophomore Jayden Patel was called out of the bullpen to induce a fly out and ground out to escape the jam.
  • Molloy took advantage and added another run of insurance in the bottom of the eight off the bat of junior Jack Coogan who tripled home Sanchez to increase the lead, 7-4.
  • Patel would retire the Knights in order in the ninth to secure the save and the victory.
Game Two: Molloy 8, Queens 4
  • Serving as the visiting team in game two, Molloy got off to a furious start putting together a five-run top of the first. The inning began with Welsh connecting with a solo home run, his 14th of the campaign.

  • Welsh extended the lead, 7-0, in the fourth after plating Burriesci with a sacrifice fly. Coogan followed in the fifth to open the lead to 8-0 after he singled home a run in the fifth inning.
