Rugolo's Free Position Goal Lifts Women's Lacrosse Ahead of #23 Mercy in OT

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - It would take nearly 40 goals and over 60 minutes to decide a winner, but a free position shot in the final minute of overtime from senior Megan Rugolo provided women's lacrosse with a 19-18 victory over Mercy University this afternoon from the RVC Sports Complex. The victory, just the second over the Mavericks in the last 10 years, sets Molloy at 4-8 on the season and 2-1 in East Coast Conference play. Mercy dropped to 5-5 (1-1 ECC) with the loss.

How it Happened
  • Freshman Emma Ryan was first on the board for either side just three minutes into the contest.
  • The Mavericks responded with three goals, including one on man-up.
  • Ryan netted her second of the contest to bring Molloy back within one but Mercy would respond just 20 second later.
  • A goal from Rugolo ended the frame with the Lions trailing, 4-3.
  • Senior Alexa Amorison took advantage of a man-up opportunity to knot the score at the start of the second quarter.
  • The Mavericks' offensive weapons of Riley Wallace, Leah Hansen, and Ashlin Kelly scored in a row for the second time to regain the three-goal advantage for the visitors.
  • Freshman Brooke Grossjung fed Ryan for the rookie's third goal before back-to-back markers from Rugolo tied the game.
  • Senior Sofia Quitoni took the ball nearly the length of the field and scored to give the Lions the lead with 3:35 left in the second quarter.
  • Mercy found the back of the net in the final minute of the frame to keep the teams deadlocked at the halftime break.
  • Both teams exchanged goals to start the third quarter to keep the score tied at 10.
  • Back-to-back goals from seniors Brenna Signorelli and Carly Howell gave Molloy a two-goal cushion with just over seven minutes remaining in the third.
  • Marena Morales and Maeghan Callow would tied the game for the seventh time.
  • In the final two minutes of the frame Quitoni and Kayden Meyer of Mercy each scored and the teams were tied at 13.
  • Quitoni netted her fourth of the game to start the final quarter before the combination of Wallace and Kelly fired off four-straight goals for the Mavs to make it 17-14 with just under seven minutes to play.
  • Quitoni broke the streak to bring the Lions back within two, but a seventh goal from Wallace made it 18-15 with five minutes to play.
  • Amorison and Rugolo scored within 20 second of one another to make it a one goal contest.
  • With the final seconds draining, Quitoni netted the tying goal with 16 seconds on the clock to force overtime.
  • After three minutes of overtime, the teams remained deadlocked.
