Dagnello Drives In Six At St. Thomas Aquinas

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Pomona, N.Y. – The Molloy baseball team was scheduled to play two games against the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas, but will have to wait to complete the second game of the twin-bill, as game two was suspended due to weather. The Lions topped the Spartans 22-3 in game one and currently sit tied at four in the top of the seventh in game two.
 
Molloy currently sits at 17-11 overall and 7-3 in East Coast Conference play, while the Spartans stand at 7-21 overall and 4-6 in league play.
 
Game One: Molloy 22, St. Thomas Aquinas 3
  • Senior Nicholas Dagnello put the Lions ahead, 3-0, with a three-run home run in the top of the first.
  • The long ball continued in the second, junior Sean Welsh connected with a two-run homer over the left field fence to add to the Lions lead, 5-0.
  • After junior Sean Serrano walked, graduate student Aidan Larkin doubled to plate Serrano to increase the advantage to 6-0.
  • The Lions continued its offensive attach in the top of the third. Sophomore Joe Burriesci hit an RBI single to center to make It 8-0.
  • The inning continued with a run scoring following an error and senior Patrick Sanchez capped the five-run inning with a two-run double making it 11-0 after three innings of play.
  • In the fourth, Welsh added an RBI single to left field to make it 12-0.
  • The bottom of the fourth saw the Spartans get on the board, yielding three runs to come within nine, 12-3.
  • The cardinal and white added seven runs in the top of the fifth. Junior Jack Coogan started the Lions offense with an RBI single, after Burriesci and Weslh walked with the bases loaded, Serrano and Dagnello hit two-run singles to open the lead, 19-3.
  • Molloy would tack on two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth and go on to win game one, 22-3.
  • Dagnello led the offense totaling four hits and six RBI.
  • Welsh homered as part of a two hit day, scored three runs, and drove in five.
  • Graduate student Matthew Fried picked up his first win of the season, tossing six innings allowing three runs on five hits.
  • Graduate student Ziv Gar pitched the final three innings of shutout baseball allowing just two hits to earn the save.
Game Two: Molloy 4, St. Thomas Aquinas 4 (Suspended in Top Seven)
  • The bats stayed hot for the Lions to begin two, as they totaled four in the top of the first. Welsh went deep again connecting for a home run over the left field fence, Sanchez doubled home Larkin and Serrano and sophomore capped the four-run inning with a single.
  • Redshirt Sophomore Mike Knapp would be dominant on the mound, holding the Spartans off the scoreboard and holding the opposition to three hits through five innings.
  • The Spartans were able to connect in the sixth inning to break through, putting together a four-run inning following a solo home run and two run scoring singles to bring the contest back to all square at four.
  • The contest would be suspended in the top of the seventh inning with Lions having a runner on first with no outs on the board.
Up Next
The two squads will resume game two Sunday, April 6 at Mitchel Field at 12:00 p.m. before concluding the series with a nine-inning affair beginning 30 minutes after the ending of the suspended game.
