Softball Falls Short in Doubleheader at Mercy

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – The softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Mercy University this afternoon at Smith Field. With the losses, the Lions fall to 17-25 overall and 10-6 in ECC play, while the Mavericks improve to 18-18 and 8-6 in conference action.

Game One: Mercy 2, Molloy 0
How it Happened
  • Allison Murphy led off the bottom of the first inning with a double to left center. A sacrifice bunt advanced her to third, and Victoria Seppala brought her home with a sacrifice fly to give Mercy an early 1-0 lead.
  • Sophomore pitcher Stevie Dabbadie retired six straight batters over the next two innings to keep the Mavericks off the bases.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, a single through the left side and a walk put two runners on. Jessica Fox followed with an RBI single to right field, extending the Mavericks' lead to 2-0.
  • Dabbadie fanned the next three batters in the bottom of the fifth.
  • In the top of the sixth, redshirt freshman Alexis Montgomery singled to third base before senior Natalie Moussa reached on a fielder's choice. Senior Cheralyn Dusharme followed with a single to center field before Dabbadie reached on a fielder's choice that put runners on first and second. However, the Lions couldn't convert and ended the inning scoreless.
  • Dabbadie allowed just one walk in the bottom of the sixth to hold the deficit at two runs, but Mercy pitcher Addisen Brandemarte closed out the game by retiring the Lions in order in the top of the seventh, securing a 2-0 win for the Mavericks.
Top Performances
  • Montgomery went 2-for-2 at the plate with a stolen base.
  • Dusharme and sophomores Mariah Cepeda and Amaya Page each contributed a hit.
 
Game Two: Mercy 4, Molloy 3
How it Happened
  • Moussa opened game two of the doubleheader by striking out two batters swinging in the bottom of the first.
  • In the top of the second, Cepeda reached on a fielding error and advanced to second on another misplay during freshman Gwen Woodsit's fielder's choice.
  • A walk to freshman Casey Kissinger loaded the bases, setting up Page for an RBI single to center field to put the Lions on the board.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, a walk to Onnika DeBruhl set the stage for Madilyn Lula's two-run homer to right field, giving the Mavericks a 2-1 lead.
  • A walk and a pair of singles plated an additional run for the Mavericks before Muphy's infield single to third brought in the final run, making it a 4-1 contest.
  • With two outs in the top of the seventh, Montgomery singled back to the pitcher.
  • Moussa followed with a two-run homer to left field, cutting the deficit to 4-3, but the Lions were unable to complete the comeback.

  • Moussa launched a two-run home run.
  • Montgomery went 2-for-4 at the plate.
  • Moussa struck out five batters over six innings of play.
  • Dusharme, Cepeda, and Page each tallied a hit with Page adding an RBI.
