Boca Raton, Fla. – The 22
nd-ranked Molloy baseball team fell to the Chargers of the University of New Haven, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at Lynn University. The Lions move to 6-5 on the season, while the Chargers improve to 4-3.
How it Happened
- The contest began with two scoreless innings as New Haven starter Michael Gatti and sophomore James Sill combined to allow just one hit and strikeout six.
- Molloy got on the board first in the top of the third after sophomore Charlie Imhof walked with the bases loaded to score junior Sean Serrano.
- The Lions added to its lead in the top of the fourth. Junior Sean Welsh singled up the middle to bring around Serrano and junior Jack Coogan to increase the Molloy lead, 3-0.
- From the fourth through the sixth inning, Sill kept the New Haven bats silent surrendering just one hit through the three innings to keep Molloy in front.
- New Haven got on the board in the bottom of the seventh. After a runner reached following an error, Chargers catcher Casey Cerruto doubled home a run to get them within two, 3-1.
- The Chargers knotted the contest at three in the bottom of the eighth following a run scoring off a fielder's choice and an RBI single.
- In the bottom of the ninth New Haven led off the inning with a single and advanced the runner to second. The Chargers would sacrifice the runners to second and third and win the contest following an error, 4-3.
Top Performances
- Welsh collected three hits and two RBI.
- Coogan collected two hits and a run scored.
- Graduate student Aidan Larkin, senior Nicholas Dagnello, sophomore Joe Burriesci, and Serrano eached tallied hits with Serrano scoring twice.
- Sill tossed seven innings, scattered four hits while allowing no earned runs and totaling six strikeouts.
