ECC Women’s Basketball Championship Quarterfinal Preview: #4 D’Youville vs. #5 Molloy

Buffalo, N.Y. – The fifth-seeded Molloy women's basketball team travels to take on the fourth-seeded D'Youville Saints in the ECC Quarterfinal, Wednesday, March 5 at 7:00 p.m.
 
About Molloy:
  • The Lions finished the regular season 15-14 overall and 8-8 in East Coast Conference play.
  • The cardinal and white enter postseason play for the first time since the 2021-22 campaign, where they earned the second seed and finished as the ECC runner-up.
  • Offensively, senior Samantha Muller paces the squad averaging 12.2 points and 2.1 steals per game. Earlier this season, the senior eclipsed the 1,000-career points mark combined with her time at SUNY Farmingdale.
  • Junior Sophia Yearwood has provided a lethal threat from three-point range, shooting the three-ball at a 39.8 percent clip ranking 17th in all of Division II. The junior enters the tournament averaging 10.2 points per game while shooting 85 percent from the foul line.
  • On the defensive end, senior Danielle Hippner has become one of the premier shot blockers in the country. The senior ranks third in the nation in blocks (100) and blocks per game (3.43) and is one of three players with at least 100 denials. Hippner etched herself into the Molloy record book this season, becoming the programs all-time block leader and set a new single game record for blocks in a game (12) against St. Thomas Aquinas.
  • Molloy enters the tournament winners of three of its last four, clinching a spot in the tournament with a win over Staten Island on February 26 and earning the fifth seed with its victory over UDC on March 1.
Season Series Against D'Youville:
  • The cardinal and white went 1-1 against the Saints this season.
  • Molloy won its contest in Rockville Centre, 66-53, December 12 and fell on the road to the Saints, 66-57, February 16.
  • In the contest in Rockville Centre, junior Colleen McCullagh led the Lions netting 12 points and bringing down eight rebounds, junior Rosa Rizzitelli collected 11 points, seven rebounds, and three steals, and as a team, the Lions converted eight free throws in the final two minutes to seal the victory.
  • In Buffalo, the game was a game of runs as the contest saw the game tied six times and the lead change on 12 occasions. Hippner led the way for the cardinal and white totaling 16 points and four blocks while Rizzitelli brought down a career-high 15 rebounds.
Scouting D'Youville:
  • The Saints enter the tournament as the fourth-seed holding a 10-15 overall record and 8-8 in East Coast Conference play.
  • D'Youville has won its last five contests to date en route to the tournament, last falling Mercy, 55-38, in Dobbs Ferry.
  • This is the second straight season the Saints have made the ECC Championship and the first time they will host a postseason contest on the hardwood.
  • Anna Jankovic leads the squad averaging 12.2 points and 9.1 rebounds per game while shooting 46 percent from the floor.
  • Molloy is 5-3 all-time against D'Youville.
What's next:
  • The winner of the contest will move on to face top-seeded Daemen, Saturday, March 8 at 12:00 p.m. inside Lumsden Gymnasium.
