Softball Falls Short in Doubleheader Against Southern Connecticut

New Haven, Conn. – The softball team fell in both games of a doubleheader against Southern Connecticut State University, dropping the matchups 7-4 and 7-5. The losses move the Lions to an 8-16 record, while the Owls improve to 11-7.
 
Game One: SCSU 7, Molloy 4

How it Happened
  • The Owls struck first in the bottom of the first inning with a pair of singles from Izzy Ingersoll and Rachel Miller.
  • With base runners threatening on first and second, sophomore Stevie Dabbadie ended the inning with a strikeout.
  • In the second, a fielder's choice loaded the bases, setting up Karley Austin's two-run single to center field. A sacrifice fly in the third extended Southern Connecticut's lead to 4-0.
  • A sacrifice bunt in the fourth moved a runner into scoring position for an RBI single up the middle, adding to the Owls' advantage.
  • Southern Connecticut's Cassidy Sullivan reached on an error, and Sophia Angiolini followed with an RBI single down the right field line. After a stolen base and a double, Ingersoll delivered an RBI single to push the lead to 6-0.
  • Junior Emily McGurk singled up the middle before junior Mae Savage's walk moved her into scoring position. A single from senior Natalie Moussa loaded the bases for the Lions.
  • Senior Cheralyn Dusharme put the Lions on the board with a three-run double to right center.
  • Dabbadie then singled through the left side, advancing pinch-runner Madison Gangi to third.
  • Sophomore Mariah Cepeda grounded out to second but brought Gangi home, cutting the deficit to 7-4.
  • Moussa held the Owls to just one hit in the sixth to keep Molloy within three runs going into the seventh inning.
  • In the seventh, two runners reached on a fielding error, but the Lions were unable to complete the comeback.

  • Dusharme led the offense with a three-run double, while Cepeda added an RBI.
  • Moussa extended her 23-game hit streak with a base hit.

Game Two: SCSU 7, Molloy 5

How it Happened
  • After a scoreless first inning, the Lions struck first with a lead off single to left field from Dusharme, followed by Dabbadie's double to right, putting two runners in scoring position.
  • Cepeda then delivered an RBI single to left field, advancing to second on the throw while scoring Dusharme.
  • Redshirt freshman Alexis Montgomery drew a walk, setting up Savage's two-run single to left field, giving Molloy an early 3-0 lead.
  • In the third inning, Moussa led off with a solo home run down the left field line.
  • Southern Connecticut responded in the bottom half with a lead off double and two singles to load the bases. A groundout plated one run, followed by a two-run single that brought the Owls within one.
  • The home team took advantage of a wild pitch that moved Samantha LaFemina into scoring position, allowing Ingersoll's RBI single to right center to even the score at 4-4.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, two fielding errors and a single loaded the bases before back-to-back RBI singles put the Owls ahead 7-4.
  • Page led off the sixth with a double to left center, and Montgomery's sacrifice bunt advanced her to third.
  • McGurk followed with an RBI double to right field, cutting the deficit to 7-5.
  • Moussa was dominant in the third inning, striking out three consecutive batters swinging.
  • The Lions threatened in the seventh by loading the bases but were unable to capitalize.
Top Performance
  • Dabbadie and Page both went 3-for-4 at the plate, each tallying a double.
  • Savage contributed two hits and two RBIs, while McGurk added two hits and an RBI. Dusharme also recorded two hits.
  • Moussa pitched 4.1 innings, striking out four.
  • Moussa and Cepeda both added a hit and an RBI.

The Lions return home tomorrow (Mar. 30) to host Wilmington University (Del.) at 12:00 p.m. at Bob Klein Field.
