Coogan Slugs First Career Home Run; Baseball Tops Assumption, 12-8

Uniondale, N.Y. – The Molloy baseball team stepped out of ECC play to host the Greyhounds of Assumption Wednesday afternoon at Mitchel Field. The Lions picked up the victory, 12-8, improving to 13-8 on the campaign. Following the loss, the Greyhounds move to 2-19.

How it Happened
  • Sophomore James Sill began the scoring for the Lions in the bottom of the first with an RBI single.
  • Neither team would score in the second before the Greyhounds would plate five in the top of the third on the back of a run scoring following a passed ball, an RBI single, and a three-run home run to pull ahead, 5-1.
  • In the bottom of the frame the Lions answered right back, rallying to four runs to knot the game at five. Sill got it going with an RBI triple and came around to score after senior Patrick Sanchez singled to right field.
  • Two batters later, junior Jack Coogan tripled down the right field line to bring home Sanchez and junior Jeremy Taggart capped the inning with a single up the middle to plate Coogan to tie the game.
  • The Lions retook the lead, 6-5, in the bottom of the fourth following an error.
  • The bottom of the fifth saw the Lions add to its lead, 8-5. Coogan connected on his first career home run over the left field fence and junior Sean Serrano singled into center field to plate the games eighth run.
  • The gritty Greyhounds would not quit, plating a run in the sixth and seventh to cut the deficit to one, 8-7.
  • In the top of the eighth Assumption threatened to tie the contest putting runners on first and third with one away.
  • Freshman Jayden Patel was called out of the bullpen to get two outs and the right-hander delivered, recording a strikeout and an inning ending ground out to escape the jam and keep Molloy in front.
  • The cardinal and white put together a four-run bottom of the eighth to break the game open. Taggart drove in a pair of runs with a double, sophomore Joe Burriesci recorded a sacrifice fly, and junior Sean Welsh capped the inning with a run scoring single to increase the Lions lead, 12-7.
  • Assumption would have one run cross the plate in the top of the ninth and have the bases loaded with one out, but once again Patel would close the inning with a strikeout and ground out to secure the victory, 12-8.
