Baseball Sweeps DH Against Staten Island

Uniondale, N.Y. – The Molloy baseball team opened the home portion of its conference schedule Saturday afternoon sweeping the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island (10-0 and 6-1) at Mitchel Field. The Lions improve to 11-8 overall and 2-1 in East Coast Conference play, while the Dolphins move to 6-18 overall and 1-2 in league play.
 
Game One: Molloy 10, Staten Island 0
  • After a scoreless first inning, junior Jack Coogan put the Lions on the board with an RBI double in the bottom of the second.
  • Molloy put together a four-run bottom of the third to extend its lead, 5-0. The first run of the inning came following a throwing error, senior Patrick Sanchez drove in a run following a ground out, and sophomore Thomas Walker capped the inning with a two-RBI single into center field that scored Sanchez and junior Sean Serrano.
  • In the top of the fourth the Dolphins threated putting runners on second and third with two outs, but sophomore James Sill induced an inning ending ground out to keep the visitors off the board.
  • The cardinal and white added to its lead, 6-0, in the sixth after junior Sean Welsh converted a sacrifice fly.
  • The offense would continue for the Lions as they tacked on two more runs in the seventh following a pair of RBI singles from Walker and junior Jeremy Taggart to make the score, 8-0.
  • The home team would put the icing on the cake in the eighth. Welsh connected on a solo home run to left field and Sanchez drove tallied an RBI double to solidify the game one victory, 10-0.
  • Welsh and Sanchez totaled three hits, two RBI, and two runs scored with Sanchez swiping two bases.
  • Walker made his first collegiate start picking up two hits and driving in three.
  • Serrano added three hits and two runs scored, Taggart and sophomore Joe Burriesci collected two hits and scored a run.
  • Sill improved to 4-0 on the season after tossing eight shut out innings and tying a season-high nine strikeouts.
Game Two: Molloy 6, Staten Island 1
  • Molloy jumped ahead in the bottom of the first to begin game two following an RBI ground out from graduate student Aidan Larkin.
  • In the second, graduate student Stephen Collica snuck a single through the left side to bring home Sanchez to extend the lead, 2-0.
  • The bats stayed hot for the Lions in the third putting together a three-run inning. Larkin got it started with a single up the middle to score Welsh, senior Nicholas Dagnello roped a run scoring double to right field, and Coogan finished the inning with an RBI double to increase the lead, 5-0.
  • In the fifth inning, Walker converted again singling home a run to tack onto the lead, 6-0.
  • The Dolphins led off the seventh with a solo home run to bring them within five, but the Lions would get the next three straight outs to secure the doubleheader sweep, 6-1.
  • Larkin drove in two runs while Welsh totaled two hits and two runs scored.
  • Coogan, Collica, Dagnello, and Walker tallied a hit and an RBI.
  • Senior Thomas Lebrecht put together a three-hit day.
  • Redshirt sophomore Mike Knapp picked up the victory, pitching four innings allowing six hits and striking out seven to improve to 2-2.
  • Redshirt junior Sean Mileti pitched the final three innings surrendering two hits and one run while striking out three to pick up his first save of the season.
