Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The women's basketball team fell to the Adelphi University Panthers this evening, 67-61, from Bob Houlihan Gymnasium. The Lions sit at 3-10 on the season following the loss while Adelphi improved to 8-1.
How it Happened
- Adelphi would score the first five points of the contest before a pair of foul shots from senior Rosa Rizzitelli and three points from senior Colleen McCullagh knotted the score.
- The teams would then be tied again at nine three minutes later before exchanging leads four times.
- Molloy was finally able to pull in front 18-13 by ending the frame on a 6-0 run that saw four points from sophomore Iris Hoffman.
- The lead would extend to as many as seven points early in the second quarter following a jump shot from senior Sophia Yearwood.
- The Panthers would mount a comeback to close out the frame, coming within two headed into the final three minutes and closing the half on a 6-0 run to lead 31-29 at the break.
- The run would stretch into the third quarter with Adelphi once again scoring the first five points before back-to-back three pointers from Hoffman and freshman Monique Echols would make it a one-possession contest, 37-35.
- A 10-point run from the Panthers broke open the game at 52-39 headed into the final minute of the frame, but a layup from Yearwood would break the streak before the quarter ended.
- The visitors maintained a double digit lead through most of the fourth quarter until a nine-point run from the duo of Rizzitelli and McCullagh clawed the Lions back within two, 63-61, with just over 90 seconds to play.
- A costly turnover put the ball back in the hands of the Panthers, who would go on to score the final four points of the game from the foul line.
Top Performances
- McCullagh topped 20 points for the ninth-straight game, totaling 22 to go with 10 rebounds for a double-double and three blocks.
- Hoffman netted a career-high 14 points while adding six assists and five rebounds.
- Yearwood also finished in double digits with 10 points.
- Rizzitelli topped the Lions with 13 points, adding nine points, six assists, two blocks, and two steals.
- Echols rounded out the scoring with a career-high six points.
