Women's Basketball Falls to Jefferson

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The women's basketball team concluded the opening weekend with a 70-55 loss to Thomas Jefferson University. Molloy fell to 1-1 with the loss while Jefferson improved to 2-0. 

How it Happened
  • The score would be tied three times in the first four minutes before back-to-back field goals from Jordyn Thomas gave the Rams a four-point lead, 10-6. 
  • Leading by three headed into the final minute of the quarter, the visitors closed the frame on a 6-0 run to lead 19-10. 
  • A double digit lead would last through most of the second frame, but a 10-2 run brought the Lions within four, 25-21, with just under three minutes to play. In the run, senior Colleen McCullagh had six points on two layups and a set of foul shots while senior Rosa Rizzitelli had a three-pointer and a foul shot. 
  • The Rams once again closed the frame on a run, scoring the final eight points of the half to lead 33-21 at the break.
  • Molloy would come within nine in the third quarter, but Jefferson maintained its advantage and increased the lead to as much as 18, 50-32, after 30 minutes of action.
  • The Lions won the fourth quarter, outscoring the visitors 23-20 on the back of shooting over 80 percent from long distance, but were unable to bridge the gap.
Top Performances
  • Rizzitelli had a double-double for the second-straight contest, leading with 10 rebounds while adding 11 points. 
  • McCullagh's 17 points paced the Lions, adding six rebounds or two blocks. 
  • Senior Sophia Yearwood dished out four assists, tying a team-high, while adding 13 points. 
  • Sophomore Iris Hoffman led with three blocks and matched four assists. Sophomore Jamie Davneiro also added four assists and added two blocks.
  • Freshman Sharmeela Ugbogbo had two blocks to go with eight rebounds and seven points.

The Lions will head on the road on Wednesday (Nov. 19) to take on the Tigers of Holy Family University at 6:00 p.m. from Philadelphia, Pa.
