Volleyball Wins Fifth-Straight

Sparkill, N.Y. - The volleyball team swept the Spartans of Saint Thomas Aquinas College this evening from Aquinas Hall. Molloy improved to 17-7 on the season and 10-1 in East Coast Conference play and will face Mercy in the regular season finale to determine the Regular Season Champion this weekend.

How it Happened
  • Molloy opened the contest on a 6-1 run with a block and kill from junior Erin Stanley and an ace an kill from graduate student Julia Zalta.
  • STAC would score just four more points before Molloy got to its 17th. As part of a 6-1 run, Zalta had back-to-back kills before senior Ilaria Micol Chiericati tallied a block, kill, and service ace.
  • Kills from senior Teresa Moulder, sophomore Isabella Rios, and freshman Haven Trechter helped the Lions cruise to the set victory.
  • STAC struck first in the second set before Molloy forced a tie score on four occasions.
  • A kill from Zalta, who paired with Stanley for a block the following point, gave the visitors a 9-7 advantage. 
  • The Spartans would come within one, but a lengthy 12-1 rally all but sealed the set for Molloy.
  • The rally continued into the third set with three-straight aces from Zalta to make it 5-1.
  • STAC responded with a rally of its own to tie the score at 8 before taking a 12-11 lead.
  • 11 of the next 13 points would fall in favor of the Lions, making it 22-14. Back-to-back kills from Trechter followed by a service ace from senior Aria Miller clinched the contest for Molloy.
Top Performances
  • Trechter led with 10 kills on the evening, attacking at a .333 clip, and added seven digs and a block.
  • Zalta followed with five kills and led with both 11 assists and five aces to go with three digs and two blocks.
  • Stanley and Chiericati both had four kills with Stanley adding four blocks, including three solo, and Chiericati following with three.
  • Junior Hayden Riddle tallied nine assists to go with four digs and an ace.
  • Miller led with 14 digs and added two assists and two aces.
  • Rios tallied nine digs to go with an ace, block, and two kills. 
Up Next
The final game of the regular season will determine the Regular Season Champion and top-seed in the upcoming East Coast Conference Tournament. The Lions take on the Mavericks of Mercy University on Saturday (Nov. 15) at 12:00 p.m. from Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.
