New Haven Conn. – The Molloy women's soccer team wrapped up its regular season slate Friday night, topping the Owls of Southern Connecticut State, 2-1, at Jess Dow Field. The Lions conclude the regular season 11-2-4 overall, while the Owls move to 3-9-3.
The cardinal and white conclude the regular season unbeaten in its final 15 contests (11-0-4) dating back to September, 6. The Lions will enter postseason play ranked sixth in the East Region by United Soccer Coaches and in consideration for the NCAA Tournament.
How it Happened
- The first chance of the game came from sophomore Sarah Cavllo when she put a shot high in the sixth minute.
- Southern Connecticut got on the board in the 14th minute after Shelby Green found the back of the net to put the Owls ahead, 1-0.
- The Lions were held without a shot on goal until the 37th minute, when junior Isabella Muro fired a shot that would be saved by SCSU goalkeeper Abby Aughe.
- Three minutes later, senior Abigail Smith crossed a ball from the left side of the box and freshman Rebecca Petrellese was there to bury it into the back of the net to know the contest at one.
- The Owls put together two shots, nine seconds apart in the 41st minute, but junior goalkeeper Elyse Muñoz made a pair of saves to keep the score tied heading into halftime.
- Molloy started the second half with three shots in the first seven minutes, with one coming on goal from Muro that was saved.
- Muro continued to put pressure on the home teams defense, firing another shot to try and take the lead, but once again the attempt would be saved.
- In the 62nd minute, Southern Connecticut cleared a Molloy rush. Sophomore Michela Napolitano found the clearing ball and belted a shot from over 30 yards out that snuck below the cross bar and into the net to put Molloy in front, 2-1.
- The cardinal and white surrendered just one shot for the remainder of the game in the 77th minute. An unsettled ball would be shot towards target but hit off the crossbar to deny the opportunity.
- The final 13 minutes would go by with Molloy controlling the action as they would go on to clinch the victory, 2-1.
Top Performances
- Petrellese netted her first career goal while totaling a career high five shots with two coming on goal.
- Napolitano tallied her first goal of her career.
- Smith dished out her fourth assist of the season.
- In goal, Muñoz made two saves.
