Women’s Soccer Defeats Daemen, 2-1, In ECC Showdown

Amherst, N.Y. – The Molloy women's soccer team picked up a key East Coast Conference victory Saturday afternoon, topping the Wildcats of Daemen University, 2-1, at Royal Park. The Lions improve to 8-2-3 overall and 3-0-2 in ECC play, while the Wildcats move to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in league play.
 
How it Happened
  • The Wildcats looked to get on the board quickly in the first 48 seconds with a shot that forced a save by junior goalkeeper Elyse Muñoz.
  • Molloy's offense introduced themselves quickly in the opening five minutes. Sophomore Bella Juliano and junior Isabella Muro put together scoring chances in the third and fifth minute, but both chances were denied by Daemen goalkeeper Becca Schultz.
  • The Lions found the back of the net in the eighth minute, after Muro connected with sophomore Sarah Cavallo who finished to put the road team ahead, 1-0.
  • The cardinal and whites' offense continued to pressure over the next 14 minutes of play, totaling five shots with three coming on goal, but would not be able to extend the lead.
  • The 24th minute saw Daemen's Kyle Miranto look to tie the game, but Muñoz secured the save.
  • Molloy would total five shots on goal in the final 21 minutes of the first half while holding Daemen to one shot. All five attempts could not beat Schultz, sending the contest into halftime with the Lions ahead, 1-0.
  • The second half begin with senior Mikaela Barriga generating a scoring chance 15 seconds in, but Barriga would be denied the finish.
  • The contest turned into a defensive battle over the next 30 minutes of action. Both teams combined for just four shots with none of them finding target.
  • In the 77th minute sophomore Jana Strait sought an insurance goal, firing a shot that would ring off the cross bar to keep the contest within one goal.
  • The Wildcats tallied its first shot on goal of the second half in the 85th minute after Casey Keller fired a shot thar was saved by Muñoz.
  • The road team would find an important second goal in the 88th minute after graduate student Emma Beattie was able to find the back of the net to extend the lead, 2-0.
  • With 1:05 to play, Daemen was awarded a penalty kick after being fouled inside the 18-yard box. Macayla Hansem of the Wildcats was able to convert the attempt to bring the home team within one, 2-1.
  • The final 65 seconds would not see a shot as the contest would close with Molloy the victors, 2-1.
Top Performances
  • Cavallo netted her second goal of the season while leading the squad with six shots and three shots on goal.
  • Beattie tallied her fourth goal of the season, marking her third designated winning goal.
  • Muro dished out her fifth assist of the campaign.
  • In goal, Muñoz made three saves.

Molloy returns to Rockville Centre Wednesday, October 22 for an East Coast Conference matchup against Queens. Kick-off is slated for 4:00 p.m.
