Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Sets Program Record for Shots in Shootout Loss to Saint Michael's

Uniondale, N.Y.- It would take more than 80 minutes to decide a winner in this afternoon's field hockey contest against St. Michael's, with the visiting Purple Knights taking a 2-1 victory in a shootout. Freshman Katie Ogurick set new program records with 14 total shots and 12 shots on goal, breaking a nine year old record for total shots and a seven year old record for shots on goal in a single game.

Through regulation, the only goals came via penalty strokes. Sophomore Samantha Naples broke a 47-minute deadlock, netting her second penalty stroke of the season to take the lead, but the Purple Knights responded quickly to force overtime. After two extra scoreless quarters, Saint Michael's came out on top in the fifth round of the shootout.
With the result, the Lions fall to 1-11 (0-8 NE-10), and the Purple Knights improve to 1-13 (1-7 NE-10).

Before the contest, the program recognized Gianna Mastrocco (biology), Catherine Amini (nursing), Dayanna Ortiz-More (nursing), and Nikki Longhitano (criminal justice) in a senior day ceremony.

How it Happened
  • The Lions set the tone early, firing off six shots in the first three minutes of play, including early strikes on goal from Longhitano and Ogurick.
  • The Purple Knights earned two corner opportunities late in the first frame, forcing junior goalkeeper Kayla Monique Lipscomb to make a pair of saves.
  • In the closing minutes of the opening frame, Mastrocco, Ogurick, and junior Lauren Brodowsky, kept the pressure on Saint Michael's, combining for four shots.
  • Ogurick and Mastrocco carried that momentum into the second quarter, forcing Purple Knights' goalie Joelle Cameron into three early saves.
  • Saint Michael's earned another penalty corner in the 20th minute, firing three quick shots that were all denied by Lipscomb.
  • Molloy continued to dominate possession, out-shooting the Purple Knights 15–3 in the second frame.
  • Mastrocco, Longhitano, and sophomore Sophia Hammond each tested Cameron in the third quarter but were unable to break through.
  • Just 53 seconds into the fourth quarter, Ortiz-More created an early scoring chance, but her shot was stopped by defender Sophie Noyes.
  • The Lions finally broke through in the 47th minute when Naples converted on a penalty stroke, giving Molloy a 1–0 advantage.
  • Saint Michael's Ruby Harrington responded two minutes later, capitalizing on a penalty stroke of her own to level the score at 1-1.
  • Molloy fired off four more shots on goal in regulation, but Cameron held strong, sending the game into overtime for the third time this season.
  • The cardinal and white dominated the first overtime period, out-shooting the Purple Knights 6–1 with shots on goal from junior Farah Amarando, Longhitano, Ortiz-More, and Mastrocco.
  • In the second overtime, only Mastrocco and Ogurick managed to get shots off for the Lions, leading to the program's first-ever shootout.
  • Both teams battled through five rounds of attempts, with both Naples and Harrington finding the back of the net in the opening round before sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Balsamo and Cameron turned away the next three attempts.
  • Saint Michael's clinched the win when Ellie Newton capitalized on the fifth attempt to give the Purple Knights its first victory of the season.
