Mastrocco Scores in Field Hockey Loss to Southern Connecticut

Uniondale, N.Y. – The field hockey team dropped a 7-1 decision against Southern Connecticut state this afternoon at Mitchel Field. With the result, the Lions drop to 1-12 (0-9 NE10) and the Owls improve to 8-7 (5-4 NE10).
 
How it Happened
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Balsamo opened the game with five saves in the first four minutes of play.
  • Southern Connecticut struck first when Keana Criscuolo scored off a feed from Taylor Leckey, giving the Owls an early 1-0 advantage.
  • The Lions responded with two penalty corners just minutes later, as junior Farah Amarando sent a shot just wide of the cage.
  • The Owls doubled its lead when Ruby Webb tapped in a pass from Leckey at the left post, putting Southern Connecticut ahead 2-0 heading into the second frame.
  • Early in the second quarter, Leckey and Natalia Fiato added quick goals to push Southern Connecticut's lead to 4-0 within the first three minutes.
  • Balsamo made three key saves following an Owls penalty corner in the 21st minute.
  • The visitors added to its lead when Isabella Folster set up Fiato for her second goal of the contest, making it 5-0.
  • Senior Dayanna Ortiz-More saw a shot go wide before fellow senior Gianna Mastrocco had her attempt blocked by an Owls defender in the third quarter.
  • The Lions' defense held strong, stopping two late corner chances to hold the Owls scoreless in the frame.
  • Early in the final quarter, Ortiz-More fired another shot on goal, but it was stopped by goalkeeper Lyla O'Connor.
  • Junior Lauren Brodowsky followed up with a pass to Mastrocco, who converted for the Lions' first goal of the contest, cutting the deficit to 5-1.
  • The Owls closed out the scoring with goals from Jessica Nodell and Folster, sealing a 7-1 victory.

  • Mastrocco netted the Lions' lone goal of the contest, and added another shot on goal.
  • Brodowsky dished out her first career assist and registered a shot on goal.
  • Ortiz-More tallied two shots, while Amarando and senior Catherine Amini each contributed another.
  • Balsamo made 16 saves in goal.
