Hippner’s Career-High Nine Blocks Helps Women’s Basketball Defeat Mercy

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – Senior Danielle Hippner was a force in the middle of the defense Saturday afternoon, collecting a career-high nine blocks in Molloy's victory over the Mavericks of Mercy University, 67-56, on Bob Houlihan Court. The Lions improve to 9-8 overall and 3-3 in East Coast Conference play, while the Mavericks move to 10-7 overall and 4-3 in league play.
 
How it Happened
  • Mercy jumped out to a pair of three-point leads, but three-point baskets from seniors Janel Moore and Samantha Muller had the contest tied at eight 3:46 into the contest.
  • Molloy closed the first quarter on a 11-5 run, holding the Mavericks to one field goal to take a 19-13 lead into the second stanza.
  • The road team began the first 1:34 of the second quarter on a 7-0 run to reclaim the lead, 20-19.
  • Mercy opened its lead to four, 25-21, with six minutes remaining in the half, but the Lions responded with a 8-0 run over the next five minutes of action to take a 29-25 lead with 1:04 left in the first half.
  • The Mavericks would sink a layup in the final minute, but would trail, 29-27, heading into halftime.
  • The first play of the second half saw junior Casey Campo convert a three-point play 12 seconds in to give the Lions a five-point lead, 32-27.
  • Back-to-back layups from the road team kept them within one, 32-31, with seven minutes left in the third.
  • The contest would stay within one possession for the next three minutes of action, before the Lions put together a mini 5-0 rally to open a eight-point lead, 41-33, with under three minutes to play in the third stanza.
  • The Mavericks would battle back and sink a pair of free throws with one second left in the quarter to come within five, 45-40, going into the fourth quarter.
  • The Lions began the fourth quarter on a 8-0 run, sparked by junior Sophia Yearwood who nailed consecutive three-point baskets to open a 13-point advantage, 53-40, with 8:37 left on the scoreboard.
  • The road team responded with a 9-2 run of its own to cut the deficit to single digits, 55-49, with 6:40 remaining.
  • The cardinal and white would reestablish its 13-point lead over the next five minutes of action, shooting four-of-five from the field to take a 64-51 lead with under two minutes to go.
  • Molloy would seal the victory with three free throws down the stretch to solidify the victory, 67-56.
Top Performances
  • Muller tied a game-high scoring 20 points while grabbing six rebounds and swiping four steals.
  • Yearwood totaled 14 points behind four three-point baskets.
  • Moore tallied eight points, eight assists, and a game-high five steals.
  • To go along with her nine blocks, Hippner added five points and a team-high seven rebounds.
