Women’s Soccer Opens 2024 Campaign Against Adelphi

Waltham, Mass. – The Molloy women's soccer team opened the 2024 campaign against the reigning East Region Champion Adelphi Panthers Thursday afternoon. The Lions fell to the Panthers, 3-0, in a neutral site contest hosted by Bentley University.
 
How it Happened
  • The first opportunity of the contest went to Adelphi in the 11th minute when Gia Mandile sent her shot wide.
  • In the 28th minute freshman Jana Strait generated the first chance of the game for the Lions with a shot that was saved by Adelphi goalkeeper Peyton DeRouen.
  • A minute later, the Panthers netted the first goal of the contest to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Lions looked for the equalizer in the 35th minute, but Strait had her shot attempt blocked by the Adelphi defense.
  • Following a save from sophomore Elyse Muñoz in the 40th minute, junior Olivia Ingenito opened a scoring chance for herself, but her attempt was saved.
  • The Panthers would try and get a second goal in the first half with 1:08 to go, but Muñoz would make a save to keep the game within one, 1-0, heading into halftime.
  • Coming out of the locker room Adelphi took eight shots in 20 minutes, forcing Muñoz to make three saves to keep Molloy within one.
  • In the 76th minute, the pressure of the Panthers continued as they notched its second goal of the contest to extend its lead, 2-0.
  • Ingenito would create the Lions final scoring chance to try and get the Lions within one, but her shot was denied by DeRouen.
  • Adelphi would net its third goal in the 89th minute and go on to secure the victory, 3-0.
Top Performances
  • Strait totaled three shots including two on goal in her first collegiate game.
  • Ingenito had two shots with both landing on target.
  • In goal, Muñoz made seven saves.

The Lions return to action Saturday, September 7 as they will play the host school Bentley at 2:00 p.m.
