Strait’s Brace Leads Women’s Soccer Past Mercy

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – Two second half goals from freshman Jana Strait led the Molloy women's soccer team past the Mavericks of Mercy University, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions improve to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in East Coast Conference play, while the Mavericks move to 3-4-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.

How it Happened
  • In the opening three minutes of the contest, Strait saw an opportunity for a shot, but it was blocked at the top of the 18-yard box.
  • Over the next 10 minutes of action, Mercy generated four chances with three of them landing on target, but sophomore Elyse Muñoz made three saves to keep the game scoreless.
  • For the remainder of the half, both teams played stout defense not giving an inch to one another sending the contest into halftime scoreless.
  • The second half started off quickly. Sophomore Isabella Muro generated a chance five minutes in that forced Mercy goalkeeper Anneliese Becker to make a save.
  • Under a minute later, the Mavericks responded with a deep shot that just curled high above the crossbar, keeping the game in a grid lock.
  • In the 55th minute the Lions broke through. Following a cross into the box freshman Sarah Cavallo fired a shot that was saved, but Strait was standing right on the doorstep to put the rebound into the back of the net to put Molloy in front, 1-0.
  • Mercy looked to get the goal right back in the 59th minute, but a shot from Amiah Washington had her shot blocked by the defense.
  • The cardinal and white sealed the contest in the 62nd minute. While streaking down the right flank, Muro sent it a perfect cross and found Strait and the freshman headed it in, putting Molloy in front, 2-0.
  • Molloy would allow one shot for the remainder of the contest, that was saved and go on to pick up an ECC opening victory, 2-0.
