Women’s Soccer Falls to Caldwell

Caldwell, N.J. – The Molloy women's soccer team suffered a 6-2 loss to the Cougars to Caldwell University Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Athletic Field. The Lions move to 1-3 on the season, while the Cougars improve to 2-1-1.
 
How it Happened
  • The Lions wasted no time to get started. In the third minute, the first shot attempt of the game came from sophomore Isabella Muro who found the back of the net to get Molloy off to an early 1-0 lead.
  • Looking to build on its lead, junior Mikaela Barriga looked to score but her shot was blocked.
  • Freshman Sarah Cavallo created space for a shot in the sixth minute, but her attempt was saved keeping the game at 1-0.
  • The home team was able to answer in the seventh minute, when their first shot of the contest found the back of the next to knot the contest at one.
  • The Cougars would go on to score three unanswered goals, scoring in the 16th, 24th, and 31st minute to open a 4-1 advantage.
  • The cardinal and white struck back in the 34th minute, cutting the deficit in half, 4-2, following a goal from junior Olivia Ingenito.
  • The road team would have one last chance before halftime from junior Abigail Smith, but her attempt went wide of target to send the contest to halftime with Molloy behind. 4-2.
  • Freshmen Meghan Wetzel and Jana Strait created chances in the first five minutes of the second half, but one shot was saved the other was sent wide keeping Molloy at a two-goal deficit.
  • In the 52nd the home team reopened its three-goal lead, scoring its fifth of the contest to take a 5-2 lead.
  • Caldwell would add its final goal of the afternoon in the 71st minute, to take a commanding 6-2 lead and come out with the win.
Top Performances
  • Muro scored her first goal of the season while totaling three shots.
  • Ingenito tallied her first goal of the campaign.
  • Freshman Jana Strait dished out two assists and led the team with five shots.

The Lions will have 10 days to prepare for its next match when they head to New Hampshire on Tuesday, September 24 to take on Franklin Pierce. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
