Rockville Centre, N.Y. – A goal from freshman
Jana Strait in the final 10 minutes pushed the Molloy women's soccer team ahead for good, as they defeated the Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions improve to 1-2, while the Lightning move to 0-3.
How it Happened
- The first two chances of the contest came from Goldey-Beacom as they generated two shots in the opening six minutes, but neither would land on target.
- Over the next 16 minutes of action junior Olivia Ingenito would generate four shots, but the defense of Goldey-Beacom would force three wide of target and block the other.
- The Lions would tally an additional three shots, but still could not land them on target giving the home team a 7-2 shots advantage through 29 minutes of play.
- Sophomore Isabella Muro was able to create space to try and break the scoreless draw, but her attempt was denied by Lightning goalkeeper Nikki Cashin.
- Sophomore Madison Keenan and freshman Meghan Wetzel generated scoring opportunities in the 36th and 37th minute, but both attempts were saved.
- In the 38th minute, Goldey-Beacom looked to crack the scoreboard, but sophomore Elyse Muñoz made a save to deny the chance and send the game into halftime knotted at zero.
- The cardinal and white wasted no time in the second half trying to get on the scoreboard. Strait and junior Mikaela Barriga tallied a shot each in the first two minutes, but Strait had her shot blocked and Barriga's was saved to keep zeroes on the scoreboard.
- Muñoz would go on to make saves in the 49th and 56th minute, keeping the game in a defensive gridlock, 0-0.
- The Lions would finally breakthrough in the 66th minute. Streaking down the right sideline, Strait crossed the ball into the box and found the head of Barriga who buried it into the back of the net to break the scoreless tie, 1-0.
- Nine minutes later, Goldey-Beacom was able to beat Muñoz off a shot from the top of the 18-yard box to turn the game back tied, 1-1.
- One minute and 32 seconds and being substituted into the game, freshman Sarah Cavallo found opened space on the left side of the field, sent in a through ball and found the foot of Strait who finished the chance to reestablish the lead for Molloy, 2-1, in the 82nd minute.
- Strait's goal would end up being the game-winner as the Lions would hold on for the victory, 2-1.

- Strait collected her first career goal and assist to total three points on the afternoon.
- Barriga netted her first goal of the season and tallied two shots.
- In goal, Muñoz made three saves to pick up her first win of the season.
