Staying Alive! Softball Staves off Elimination to Play in Sub-Regional Final

Garden City, N.Y.- The sixth-seeded softball team will return to the NCAA East Sub-Regional Final, staving off elimination with a 3-2 victory over third-seeded Pace University. The Lions fell to second-seeded Adelphi in this morning's winner's bracket, 6-1, to set up the match up against Pace and enter tomorrow's final with a record of 32-23.

Game Three: Adelphi 6, Molloy 1
How it Happened
  • A double to left field from graduate student Steph Conrade set the stage for fellow graduate student Alex Burn's triple to left field to give Molloy a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
  • A pitchers' duel would ensue with both pitchers allowing just a combined three hits through the next four innings.
  • A home run to left field for Angela Lignelli leveled the score at one in the top of the sixth inning.
  • Burns started off the sixth inning with a walk before a single to right center from freshman Stevie Dabbadie put runners on the corners. Pinch runner freshman Amaya Page stole second to put two in scoring position with one out, but back-to-back strikeouts from Lindsey Hibbs put an end to the threat.
  • Brianna Fischer homered to left center to break the stalemate before three consecutive singles would load the bases.
  • A fielding error, a ground-out RBI, and a single to right center would round out the scoring 6-1 in favor of the Panthers.

How it Happened

  • Bachman and sophomore Emily McGurk both scored on a single from senior Chrissie Huhn to make it 3-0 in favor of the Lions.
  • A pair of walks put runners on first and second, setting up a two-RBI double from Carolina Iturriaga to cut the deficit to just one run.
  • A single to right center for Sophie Valle put both the tying and go-ahead runs on base, but a line drive double play was turned by Dabbadie at first base.
