Offense Powers No. 16 Baseball to DH Sweep of Lincoln

Lincoln University, PA – On the back of 36 runs on 33 hits over the course of two games Saturday afternoon, the 16th ranked Molloy baseball team picked up a pair of wins (19-0 and 17-9) over the Lions of Lincoln University. Molloy improves to 20-8 overall and 6-3 in East Coast Conference play, while Lincoln moves to 7-19 overall and 1-9 in league play.
 
Game One: Molloy 19, Lincoln 0
  • Three runs crossed the plate for Molloy in the top of the first inning, following a run scoring ground out from senior Aidan Larkin and a two-RBI single from senior Anthony Manisero.
  • The cardinal and white added six runs in the top of the third off five hits. Senior Matt Yip led off the frame with a solo home run, freshman Anthony Marsillo drove in a run with a single, junior JJ DeVito plated a pair with a single, and two runs crossed the plate via a error to give Molloy a 9-0 advantage.
  • The road team tacked on six additional runs in the fourth to open a 15-0 lead.
  • Freshman Joe Burriesci collected an RBI single in the fifth inning and the cardinal and white would go on to score three runs in the eighth to complete the game one victory, 19-0.
  • Graduate student Charlie Cucchiara tossed six shutout innings and struck out five without allowing a walk to improve to 6-0 on the campaign.
  • Burriesci paced the offense with four hits and three RBI.
  • DeVito, Larkin, Yip, Manisero, and Marsillo drove in two runs each.
Game Two: Molloy 17, Lincoln 9
  • Molloy opened game two with a four run first inning to take a 4-0 lead. Senior Gavin McAlonie scored DeVito with an RBI single, two runs would score following an error and the inning was capped with Manisero scoring off a wild pitch.
  • Lincoln got two runs back in the bottom of the frame to cut the deficit in half, 4-2.
  • The cardinal and white responded with two runs of its own in the top of the second following a sacrifice fly from McAlonie and an RBI double from Yip to reclaim its four-run lead, 6-2.
  • The road team opened a 11-run advantage, 13-2, following a seven-run top of the third. Senior Chris Giardino started the offense with a two-run single, McAlonie and junior Patrick Sanchez added run scoring singles of its own, DeVito drove in a run with a double, and two runs scored off an error.
  • Molloy would score a run in the fourth and three in the sixth and go on to sweep the doubleheader, 17-9.
  • DeVito totaled three hits and three runs scored.
  • McAlonie, Yip, and junior Nicholas Dagnello collected two hits and two RBI with McAlonie topping the squad with three RBI.

Molloy will wrap up its series with Lincoln Sunday (Apr. 7) with a doubleheader. First pitch of the twin bill is set for 12:00 p.m.
