DeVito Collects Seven Hits in No. 15 Baseball Doubleheader Sweep of Staten Island

Staten Island, N.Y. – Outscoring its opponent, 25-2, the 15th-ranked Molloy baseball team swept the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island (9-0 and 16-2) Saturday afternoon at CSI Baseball Complex. The Lions improve to 33-10 overall and 15-4 in East Coast Conference play, while the Dolphins move to 12-26 overall and 7-16 in league play.
 
Game One: Molloy 9, Staten Island 0
  • The contest began as a pitcher's duel as neither team was able to scratch a run across the plate in the first four innings.
  • The Lions broke through in the fifth inning. Junior Nicholas Dagnello plated the games first run with an RBI ground out and freshman Joe Burriesci and senior Chris Giardino collected back-to-back RBI singles to open a 3-0 lead.
  • Molloy broke the game open in the top of the seventh inning rallying for six runs to take a 9-0 lead. Senior Gavin McAlonie started the scoring with an RBI single, senior Matt Yip followed suit with a run scoring double, senior Anthony Manisero plated McAlonie and Yip with a single and later scored after stealing third and forcing an errant throw to cross the plate, and Burriesci capped the inning with a run scoring single up the middle.
  • The Lions pitching staff halted the Dolphins offense, holding them to four hits to complete the game one shut out, 9-0.
  • On the mound, senior Ryan Hynes tossed seven scoreless innings allowing four hits and striking out nine to improve to 8-1 on the campaign.
  • Freshman Thomas Charlwood pitched the final two perfect innings and punched out three batters.
Game Two: Molloy 16, Staten Island 2
  • The Lions wasted no time in game two, opening the top of the first inning with eight runs to grab complete control of the contest.
  • McAlonie plated the game's opening run with a sacrifice fly, two runs came in following an error, junior Patrick Sanchez doubled home a run, junior JJ DeVito singles to plate a pair of runs, and the final run scoring off an error.
  • The cardinal and white continued its rally in the top of the third. DeVito belted a two-run home run and Sanchez drove in two runs with a single to open a 12-0 advantage after three innings of action.
  • Redshirt junior Matthew Gonchar joined the scoring with a two-RBI single in the top of the fourth inning, extending the Lions lead, 14-0.
  • Staten Island plated two runs in the bottom of the frame off a pair of RBI singles to cut the deficit to 14-2.
  • Molloy would score a run in the sixth and seventh and go on to complete the doubleheader sweep, 16-2. 
  • Graduate student Matthew Fried tossed a complete game allowing two runs, four hits, and struck out eight to improve to 6-1 on the season.

The Lions conclude its series with the Dolphins Sunday, April 28 on senior day at Mitchel Field. Senior Day ceremony is slated to begin at 11:30 a.m. with first pitch set for 12:00 p.m.
