Softball Starts Florida Trip With Win Over SNHU

Melbourne, Fla. - The softball team kicked off the 2024 Space Coast Spring Games with a doubleheader split against Southern New Hampshire University. Molloy sits at 1-7 on the season following the afternoon while SNHU becomes an even 6-6. 

Game One: Molloy 4, SNHU 1
How it Happened
  • Senior Chrissie Huhn drew a walk to start the contests before scoring following a wild pitch and two errors from the Penmen infield. 
  • SNHU tied the game in the home half of the fourth inning as pinch runner Grace Jenkins scored on a throwing error.
  • With runners on first and third in the sixth inning, Molloy made it 3-1 with freshman Kiara Gaghan and graduate student Alex Burns both scoring following another error from the SNHU infield. 
  • A single from freshman Stevie Dabbadie, pinch hit fielder's choice from freshman Amaya Page, and infield single from Huhn set graduate student Steph Conrade up for an RBI single up the middle to increase the lead to three.
  • A well-executed double play from the Lions' infield and a strikeout from freshman pitcher Sophia Mariottini in the bottom of the seventh closed out the game to give Molloy its first victory of the season.
Top Performances
  • Huhn, Conrade, Dabbadie, and senior Kaite Hand each recorded hits with Conrade picking up the lone RBI.
  • Burns, Gaghan, and junior Cheralyn Dusharme each stole a base. 
  • Mariottini tossed a complete game with two strikeouts and just one earned run in her first collegiate victory.
Game Two: SNHU 7, Molloy 3
How it Happened
  • The Penmen bats went right to work in the second game, scoring four runs on five hits in the first inning. 
  • Dusharme sent a two-out double to left field before scoring on a single down the left field line from Dabbadie to set the score at 4-1 after two innings. 
  • SNHU plated two unearned runs on a throwing error in the top of the third inning.
  • Graduate student Emma Bachman doubled to left field to start the bottom half of the inning before moving to third on a double up the middle from Huhn.
  • Both scored on a single up the middle from Hand to bring the Lions within three, 6-3.
  • A sacrifice fly from Charlotte Donovan set the score at 7-3 in the sixth inning.
  • A pinch hit single from freshman Mariah Cepeda threatened damage in the bottom of the seventh, but SNHU was able to close out the contest.
Top Performances
  • Huhn, Hand, Dusharme, Dabbadie, Cepeda, and Bachman each recorded a hit with Huhn, Dusharme, and Bachman each putting up extra base hits.
  • Hand led with two RBI.
  • Dabbadie allowed just one earned run on four hits in relief. Senior Brianna Macias fell to 0-3 on the season in the start.
