Uniondale, N.Y. – The 16
th-ranked Molloy baseball team concluded its four-game series with D'Youville University Sunday afternoon, splitting its second consecutive doubleheader. The Lions fell, 5-3, in game one before defeating the Saints, 13-4, in game two. Molloy moves to 16-7 overall and 2-2 in East Coast Conference play, while the Saints move to 11-11 overall and 2-2 in league play.
Game One: Molloy 3, D'Youville 5
- D'Youville opened the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead.
- The Lions answered in the bottom of the third. Senior Aidan Larkin singled up the middle to score junior JJ DeVito to knot the contest at one.
- The road team regained the lead in the fifth following a two-run double to pull ahead, 3-2, after five innings of action.
- The Saints added two runs of insurance in the top of the eighth following an error to extend its lead, 5-2.
- Junior Patrick Sanchez cut the deficit to two, 5-3, following an RBI single in the bottom of the frame.
- Molloy was able to get the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but D'Youville would close the door and solidify the victory, 5-3.
Game Two: Molloy 13, D'Youville 4
- The Saints once again started the scoring in game two, with an RBI single in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
- The cardinal and white answered with a five-run bottom of the first to take a 5-1 lead. Senior Gavin McAlonie drove in a run with an RBI single, senior Matt Yip singled home a run, senior Anthony Manisero doubled home a pair of runs, and the Lions executed a double steal to cap the five-run inning.
- Molloy tallied its second consecutive five-run inning in the second to take a 10-1 advantage. Senior Aidan Larkin belted a two-run home run over the center field fence, Manisero singled home a run, junior Nicholas Dagnello collected a RBI sacrifice fly, and freshman Anthony Marsillo wrapped up the inning with an RBI single.
- D'Youville got a run back in the fourth to cut the deficit to eight, 10-2.
- In the bottom of the frame, junior Nicholas Dagnello connected for a solo home run to reestablish the Lions' nine-run lead, 11-2.
- The Lions added two runs in the fifth, with a run following an error and Dagnello doubled home Manisero to increase its advantage to 11, 13-2.
- D'Youville cut the deficit back to nine, 13-4, in the top of the seventh following a two-run home run, but that's all the Molloy staff would allow as the Lions would go on and take game two, 13-4.
- Graduate student Matthew Fried tossed five innings allowing two runs, one earned, two hits, and struck out eight to improve to 3-0 on the season.
- Graduate student Billy Fitzgerald pitched the final four frames allowing two runs, none earned, and one hit while striking out four to collect his first save as a Lion.
