Garden City, N.Y. – The 12
th-ranked Molloy baseball team swept the Chargers of Dominican University (14-4 and 3-1) in its home-opener Saturday afternoon at Mitchel Field. The Lions improve to 13-4 on the season, while the Chargers move to 4-14.
Game One: Molloy 14, Dominican 4
- Two runs crossed the plate for the Lions in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Junior JJ DeVito scored on wild pitch and senior Matt Yip drove in a run with an RBI single.
- Dominican cut the lead in half, 2-1, in the top of the second following an RBI double down the left field line.
- The Lions answered in the bottom of the frame as freshman Joe Burriesci collected a sacrifice fly to regain the two-run lead, 3-1.
- The cardinal and white plated three more runs in the bottom of the third, following two run scoring fielder's choice and an RBI single from redshirt junior Matthew Gonchar.
- Molloy added two runs in the bottom of the fifth when DeVito scored a runner with a ground out and Burriesci knocked Gonchar home with an RBI single to open a six-run lead, 8-1.
- The Chargers got two runs back in the top of the seventh with a two-run double to cut the deficit to five, 8-3.
- The cardinal and white got those two runs back in the bottom of the inning to reclaim its seven-run advantage, 10-3.
- The home team tacked on four runs in the bottom of the eighth. Junior Patrick Sanchez drove in a run with an infield single, junior Nicholas Dagnello walked home a run, and sophomore Jack Coogan capped the inning with a two-RBI single to push Molloy ahead, 14-3, and would go on and complete the victory, 14-4.
- Burriesci collected three hits, two runs scored, and two RBIs.
- Gonchar totaled two hits and two RBI.
- Coogan tallied a career-high four RBI.
- On the mound, graduate student Charlie Cucchiara tossed seven innings allowing three runs, two earned, and six hits to improve to 4-0 on the campaign.
Game Two: Molloy 3, Adelphi 1
- After a scoreless first inning, Molloy scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Sanchez scored following an error and Dagnello scored on a wild pitch to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.
- The cardinal and white added a run in the fourth inning as Burriesci singled to the opposite field to score Gonchar to increase the lead, 3-0.
- The Chargers were held in check until the seventh inning, scoring a run following an RBI to cut the deficit to two, 3-1.
- With the tying run on first and the go-ahead run at the plate, Dominican looked to force a bottom of the seventh, but senior Ryan Hynes struck out pinch-hitter Ty Gilligan to end the contest and complete the doubleheader sweep, 3-1.
- Hynes pitched a complete game allowing one run on seven hits and struck out six to improve to 3-0 on the season.
