No. 12 Baseball Comeback Falls Short Against Dominican

Uniondale, N.Y. – The 12
th-ranked Molloy baseball team dropped its series finale, 11-9, against the Chargers of Dominican University Sunday afternoon at Mitchel Field. The Lions move to 13-5 on the season, while the Chargers improve to 5-14.

How it Happened
- The Chargers scored four runs in the top of the first inning, on the back of three RBI singles and a run scoring off an error to take a 4-0 lead.
- Another run crossed the plate for the Chargers in the top of the second following another RBI single to open a five-run lead, 5-0.
- The Lions got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second scoring on a wild pitch to come within four, 5-1.
- After Dominican scored a run in the top of the fifth to go ahead, 6-1, Molloy would answer in the bottom of the frame with two outs. Junior JJ DeVito blasted a solo home run, and senior Aidan Larkin scored freshman Joe Burriesci with a double to cut the deficit in half, 6-3, after five innings of action.
- The Chargers tacked on two runs in the top of the sixth to take a 8-3 lead.
- In the bottom of the sixth with two outs and runners first and second, freshman Charlie Imhof was called upon as a pinch hitter and delivered a two-RBI double to bring the Lions within three, 8-5.
- The cardinal and white continued to fight back, scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh to come within two, 8-6.
- The road team added three runs of insurance in the eighth and ninth innings, plating one in the eighth and two in the ninth to regain its five-run lead, 11-6.
- In the bottom of the ninth, senior Matt Yip walked, and senior Gavin McAlonie singled to bring up junior Nicholas Dagnello. Dagnello connected and belted a three-run home run over the right center field fence to bring the Lions within two, 11-9.
- The cardinal and white were able to get the tying run into scoring position with two outs in the ninth, but the Chargers would scurry out of the jam and win the contest, 11-9.
Top Performances
- DeVito paced the team with four hits including hitting his second home run of the season.
- Dagnello totaled two hits, including his second home run of the season and drove in three runs.
- Imhof totaled two hits and totaled two RBI.Â
