Muller, Sanchez Top 20 Points; Women’s Basketball Wins Overtime Thriller at Queens

Flushing, N.Y. – Needing an extra five minutes of game time, the Molloy women's basketball team snapped its four-game skid, defeating the Knights of Queens College, 73-67, in overtime Wednesday evening at Fitzgerald Gymnasium. The Lions improve to 9-12 overall and 4-7 in East Coast Conference play, while the Knights move to 6-16 overall and 2-9 in league play.
 
How it Happened
  • The Lions began the contest ahead, 8-6, propelled by graduate student Isabel Sanchez who drained two three-point baskets.
  • The Knights responded with an 8-0 rally to pull ahead, 14-8, with under three minutes left in the first quarter.
  • Senior Trinity Hudson sank a jumper with five seconds remaining in the stanza to cut the deficit to four, 16-12, heading into the second quarter.
  • The home team opened its largest lead of the contest, 22-15, 2:50 into the second stanza.
  • A three-point field goal from sophomore Sophia Yearwood and a three-point play from junior Samantha Muller brought the Lions quickly within one, 22-21, with 5:36 remaining in the first half.
  • Queens College would regain control and push ahead by six, 29-23, with 3:16 remaining in the second.
  • Over the next 1:54 of action, Muller would catch fire from the floor, shooting three-of-four from the field and draining one three ball, to collect a solo 7-0 run to reclaim the lead, 30-29. Molloy trailed, 31-30, heading into the locker room.
  • Muller's hot hand would continue into the second half, as the North Babylon native drained the first five points for the cardinal and white and give them a four-point lead, 35-31, 55 seconds into the third quarter.
  • The contest would remain tight midway through the third, but a jumper from Queens College guard Brianna Davis put the Knights in front, 39-38.
  • The third quarter would conclude with Sanchez scoring the final nine points including a pair of three-point shots as part of a 9-2 run, giving the Lions a 47-41 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
  • The first five points of the fourth stanza went to the home team as they battled to come within one, 47-46, with over seven minutes to go in the quarter.
  • Over the next three minutes of action, the Lions would answer every shot the Knights would sink and would take a two-possession lead, 54-49, with 4:13 to go in the stanza.
  • The Knights responded with a 7-2 run, holding the Lions to a pair of free throws to knot the contest at 56 with 76 seconds to play in the fourth.
  • With under a minute to play, Sanchez drained a three and junior Janel Moore sunk two foul shots to push the Lions in front, 61-56, with 39 seconds left.
  • Following a timeout with 32 seconds to go, Queens College drained a three, then forced a turnover, and netted the game tying layup with 14 seconds left to send the game to overtime all-square at 61.
  • The teams went back and forth in overtime, with two lead changes, and two tie scores with the game being knotted at 67 with 1:35 to play.
  • With 1:00 left on the clock, Moore found junior Danielle Hippner who broke the tie with a jumper to give Molloy a 69-67 lead.
  • Molloy shot eight-of-eight from the foul line in overtime, including four-of-four in the final 20 seconds and held the Knights off the board to go on and seal the victory, 73-67.
Top Performances
  • Muller netted a career-high 25 points shooting 9-of-11 from the foul line while collecting four steals.
  • Sanchez tallied 23 points shooting 57 percent from the floor and 50 percent from three-point range (5-of-10).
  • Hippner collected nine points, five rebounds, and three blocks.
  • Hudson added six points and a team-high 14 rebounds.
