Women's Lacrosse Stays Undefeated with Gutsy Win Over Gannon

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - After 17 minutes of back and forth scoring to end the contest, the women's lacrosse team pulled out to a 3-0 start to the 2024 season following a 13-12 victory over Gannon University this evening from the Rockville Centre Sports Complex. Gannon fell to 0-2 on the campaign with the loss.

How it Happened
  • Molloy began the contest on a five-goal run from the sticks of juniors Alexa Amorison, Sofia Quitoni, and Megan Rugolo as well as freshman Brooke Grossjung.
  • The Golden Knights would respond with a three-goal response to end the first quarter, 6-3.
  • Amorison finished a pass from Rugolo to start the second frame before three unanswered goals by Gannon tied the contest at six. 
  • Senior Joanna Mauceri gave Molloy a lead headed into the halftime break by scoring an extra-woman goal in the final minute of the quarter.
  • Junior Brenna Signorelli got on the score sheet to start the second half and give the Lions a two-goal cushion, but the Golden Knights would rally to score the next four-straight and take a 10-8 lead with less than six minutes to play in the third quarter.
  • Quitoni tallied a hat trick before goals from Mauceri and senior Erin Murphy set the score at 11-10.
  • Gannon would score a last-second goal to end the third quarter with a tie score.
  • The teams would match one another goal for goal in the fourth quarter, but Molloy would get the last word off the stick of Rugolo on the woman up. 
Top Performances
  • Quitoni had a career-high five points on three goals and two assists while adding four ground balls, three caused turnovers, and three draw controls.
  • Rugolo had three points on two goals and one assist and added three ground balls.
  • Mauceri, Amorison, Grossjung, and Murphy each put up two points with Grossjung adding four ground balls and Mauceri causing three turnovers.
  • Signorelli and freshman Victoria Bustamante each added a point with Bustamante also recorded four ground balls. 
  • Senior Mary-Kate Sweeney made two stops in net in three quarters of work while freshman Nicole Schaumloffel made two saves and picked up her first career victory by closing out the final quarter.

Molloy will take to the road for the first time in 2024 on Sunday (Mar. 3) as they play the College of Saint Rose at 3:00 p.m. from Albany, N.Y.
