Yip Homers Twice, Collects Six RBI In Baseball Doubleheader Sweep Of Chestnut Hill

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The 15th-ranked Molloy baseball team swept the Griffins of Chestnut Hill University (3-2 and 16-12) Saturday afternoon on Ebbets Field at the Ripken Experience. The Lions improved to 6-0 on the campaign, while the Griffins moved to 0-3.

Game One: Molloy 3, Chestnut Hill 2
  • The first two innings was dominated by pitching as each team only collected one hit apiece.
  • Following a leadoff single from senior Matthew Gonchar to begin the bottom of the third, junior JJ DeVito found the left center gap and scored Gonchar with an RBI double to put Molloy in front, 1-0.
  • Two batters later, senior Anthony Manisero drove in DeVito with a sacrifice fly to increase the lead, 2-0.
  • Chestnut Hill wasted no time tying the contest at two in the top of the fourth following a two-RBI double.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, it was Gonchar who led off, reaching base via an error to regain some momentum back for the Lions. Gonchar would make his way to third following a single from DeVito and a fly out from freshman Thomas Charlwood.
  • With runners on first and third, senior Matt Yip ripped the first pitch he saw into center field to score Gonchar to put Molloy ahead, 3-2.
  • The Griffins looked to tie the game in the sixth, but starting pitcher junior JC Kiss got out of the inning with a strikeout and sat the final batter of the inning down following a batter's interference to keep Molloy in front, 3-2.
  • The Lions would hold the Griffins without a baserunner for the final three innings on the back of senior Timmy Mott and would go on to win the contest, 3-2.
  • Kiss tossed six innings allowing two runs, on three hits, and struck out four to pick his first win of the season.
  • Mott tossed the last three perfect innings and whiffed four batters to earn his first save of the season.
Game Two: Molloy 16, Chestnut Hill 12
  • Game two was an old fashion slugfest that started in the first inning. Yip belted a three-run home run to give the Lions an early, 3-0, lead.
  • The long ball continued in the top of the second inning as sophomore Grayson Saltzer would deposit his first collegiate home run over the left-center field fence to increase the Lions lead, 4-0.
  • The cardinal and white tacked on two more runs in the frame scoring on a passed ball and senior Aidan Larkin drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to increase its lead, 6-0.
  • Yip capped the inning, connecting on his second home run of the afternoon, this time a two-run homer to the opposite field to extend the lead to 8-0.
  • Chestnut Hill was able to crack the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame, scoring two runs off a pair of doubles to cut the deficit to six, 8-2.
  • The bats continued to stay hot for the Lions in the top of the third. DeVito drove in a pair of runners with a single and junior Patrick Sanchez recorded a sacrifice fly to give the Lions a nine-run lead, 11-2, after three innings of play.
  • In the fourth, sophomore Sean Welsh smoked a double into left field that scored Yip to open the largest lead of the contest, 12-2.
  • The Griffins found its stride in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs in the frame to cut the lead in half, 12-6.
  • Molloy responded in the fifth when Larkin tallied an RBI single to extend the lead back to seven, 13-6.
  • Two runs would cross the plate in the bottom of the frame for the Griffins to keep them within striking distance, 13-8.
  • The cardinal and white saw three runs cross the plate in the top of the sixth inning, Charlwood tallied an RBI with a hit by pitch and junior Thomas Lebrecht poked a two-RBI double down the right field line to extend the Lions lead, 16-8.
  • The Griffins put together a furious rally in the bottom of the frame. Scoring four runs off of a pair of doubles and a single to come within four, 16-12.
  • Still in the sixth, Chestnut Hill had runners on second and third with two outs, looking to cut the deficit down even further, but freshman Jack Schulz was called from the bullpen and induced a one pitch ground out to get out of the inning and keep the contest at 16-12.
  • Schulz would finish the game in the seventh, collecting a pop out and a game ending 6-4-3 double play to give the victory to the Lions, 16-12.
