Rockville Centre, N.Y. - Led by six goals from junior
Megan Rugolo, the women's lacrosse team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 16-12 victory over Southern Connecticut State University from the RVC Sports Complex.
How it Happened
- The cardinal and white came out firing, scoring six goals on 18 shots in the first quarter of action. Rugolo had a hat trick in the first 12 minutes and added an assist.
- Senior Erin Murphy, junior Sofia Quitoni, and freshman Victoria Bustamante all found the back of the net in the first quarter for the Lions.
- The Owls would get on the board with the first two goals of the second frame, but Murphy, Quitoni, and junior Alexa Amorison all scored within four minutes of one another to give Molloy a 9-2 lead with five minutes to play in the first half.
- A run of four goals from the visitors would bring the score within three before a goal from senior Joanna Mauceri and a fourth tally from Rugolo put Molloy ahead 11-6.
- SCSU would find the back of the net in the final second of the half.
- The Owls would make it a two-goal game with markers from Allie Palmer and Savannah Feinberg early in the third quarter.
- Junior Brenna Signorelli sent a feed to Rugolo to make it 12-9 before senior Jessica Kofod netted her first career goal.
- The visitors once again had a buzzer-beating goal to come within three, 13-10, heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
- The Owls would start the fourth quarter scoring with two goals, but the Molloy defense would shut down any further attempts, including two critical saves from senior Mary-Kate Sweeney.
- Amorison, Rugolo, and Murphy would each find the back of the net in the final nine minutes to round out the scoring.
Top Performances
- Rugolo led with seven points on six goals and one assist while also causing three turnovers and controlling two draws.
- Amorison (two goals, one assist) and Murphy (three goals) each had three points while Quitoni (two goals) and Bustamante (one goal, one assist) each had two.
- Signorelli, Kofod, and Mauceri had one point apiece.
- Mauceri topped the team with five ground balls and seven draw controls while forcing three turnovers.
- Quitoni led with four caused turnovers and added six draw controls and three ground balls.
- Bustamante also forced three turnovers and picked up three ground balls.
- Sweeney made eight saves in net.
