Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The women's basketball team fell to the Mavericks of Mercy University, 73-54, this afternoon in the penultimate home game of the 2023-24 season. The Lions fell to 10-15 on the season and 4-10 in East Coast Conference play in the defeat while Mercy improved to 18-8 overall and 11-4 in league play.
How it Happened
- With the score tied at six, baskets from graduate student Isabel Sanchez and senior Trinity Hudson put the Lions in front by six, 12-6, with five minutes to play in the opening frame.
- The Mavericks ended the frame on an 11-2 run to lead 17-14.
- The run continued into the second quarter with Mercy netting the first six points and go ahead by nine. The lead would increase to as many as 13 points, 37-24 with just under three minutes to play in the half.
- Five points from Hudson and a three-pointer from sophomore Sophia Yearwood would bring the Lions within nine. Mercy ultimately led 42-32 at the break.
- Junior Janel Moore and Hudson netted back-to-back layups to bring Molloy within six, 42-36, to open the third quarter of action.
- Mercy responded with a 17-2 run to lead, 59-38. The Lions would score the final six points of the quarter on a layup from Sanchez and a layup and two made free throws from sophomore Brianna James.
- The 20-point deficit in the third quarter would ultimately be too much to recover from and the Lions would fall, 73-54.
Top Performances
- Hudson led the Lions with 18 points and 10 rebounds for her 14th double-double of the season.
- Sanchez tallied 11 points and led the team with four assists.
- Junior Danielle Hippner pulled down eight rebounds and recorded three blocks.
- Moore nabbed three steals.
