Women’s Basketball Slips at Queens in ECC Opener

Flushing, N.Y. – The Molloy women's basketball team opened East Coast Conference play Saturday afternoon at Queens College. The Lions fell, 67-60, inside Fitzgerald Gymnasium. Molloy moves to 5-5 on the campaign, while Queens moves to 3-3.
 
How it Happened
  • The Lions started quickly with a 12-2 run in the opening 4:28. The run was paced by junior Casey Campo, who netted eight points, while the Lions defense held the Knights to without a field goal.
  • Molloy would hold the host squad to just one field goal in the entire first stanza, but the Knights would go on to shoot 6-of-8 from the foul line as Molloy would take a 16-9 lead into the second quarter.
  • The roles would reverse in the second quarter, this time it would be the Knights opening the first 5:57 with a 10-1 rally, holding the Lions without a field goal and just one foul shot to take a 19-17 lead.
  • Senior Samantha Muller hit a free throw and a layup to reclaim the lead for the Lions, 20-19, with three minutes to go in the first half.
  • Over the next 1:19, Queens put together a 8-0 run to take a seven-point advantage, 27-20, with just under two minutes to play in the second quarter.
  • The two squads would trade baskets for the remainder of the half, but junior Sophia Yearwood hit a three-point basket to send the Lions into halftime behind, 31-29.
  • Coming out of the break, both teams went back to trading baskets midway through the third quarter.
  • The cardinal and white would find a rhythm over the next 2:24 of action, shooting two-of-four from the field and three-of-three from the foul line to pull ahead, 43-37, with 3:29 left in the third stanza.
  • The Knights would battle back, rallying to a 10-2 run to conclude the quarter and take a 47-45 lead into the final stanza.
  • The home team started the fourth quarter three-for-three from the floor, including a pair of three-point baskets to open its lead to seven, 55-48, with 7:07 to play.
  • The contest turned into a defensive battle as the Knights would maintain its seven-point lead, 57-50, and hold the Lions to one field goal with under five minutes remaining.
  • The cardinal and white would find its rhythm again, putting together a 10-3 rally with field goals from four different players to bring the contest all square at 60 with 1:41 left.
  • In the final 101 seconds of the contest, the home team would put together a 7-0 run to close out the victory, 67-60.
Top Performances
  • Campo netted a career-high 18 points while totaling five rebounds.
  • Muller totaled 13 points and dished out a game-high five assists.
  • Junior Rosa Rizzitelli nabbed a game-leading five steals and rounded out the scoring with nine points. Rizzitelli and senior Danielle Hippner each matched Campo's five rebounds with Hippner also recording two blocks.

Molloy will travel to Rochester Sunday, December 15 to take on Roberts Wesleyan. The contest is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
