Men's Basketball Closes 2024 With Win at Chestnut Hill

Philadelphia, Pa. - The men's basketball team concluded the 2024 portion of the season with a 69-66 victory on the road against Chestnut Hill College from Sorgenti Arena. Molloy won its second-straight contest to improve to 3-8 on the season while the Griffins fell to 4-7.

How it Happened
  • The Lions opened the contest on a 7-0 run that featured five points from junior Payton Shumpert.
  • The Griffins responded with eight-straight points to take a lead after five minutes of play.
  • The score would be tied four times in the next 10 minutes, including at 23-23 with 6:42 left in the first half.
  • A three-pointer from sophomore Bryce Merchant followed by a layup from sophomore Rob Matos pushed Molloy ahead by five.
  • The home team would come within one, 28-27, but Matos netted the final three points of the half to send the Lions to the locker room ahead, 31-27.
  • CHC worked the score back to be tied at 40 in the first five minutes of the second half before eventually taking a five-point lead, 47-42.
  • Molloy would remain within striking distance and retook a lead, 59-58, following a three-pointer from Merchant and a jumper from Shumpert.
  • The score would be knotted twice more, including as late as 61 with just over three minutes left to play.
  • A layup from senior Mick Browne paired with two free throws gave the Lions a 65-62 advantage with under two minutes to play.
  • Twice in the final 90 seconds, the Griffins would come within one, but a Matos layup with 15 seconds to go sealed the victory for the Lions.
Top Performances
  • Matos led with 24 points and five assists, going 9-of-10 from the foul line, while adding five rebounds and a steal.
  • Merchant followed with 22 points, shooting 9-of-16 with four three-pointers, to go with four rebounds.
  • Shumpert netted 13 points and pulled down six rebounds.
  • Graduate student Matt Lane led with seven rebounds and two blocks.
  • Lane and Browne each dished out two assists.

Molloy will open the 2025 calendar year on January 5 against Saint Anselm College at 12:00 p.m. from Bob Houlihan Court.
