Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy women's basketball fell to the Panthers of Adelphi University, 67-50, Saturday afternoon inside the Center for Recreation and Sport. The Lions move to 2-3 on the campaign, while the Panthers improve to 5-1.
How it Happened
- After junior Rosa Rizzitelli opened the contest for the Lions with a layup, the Panthers went on a 9-0 run to take a 11-2 lead with 4:22 left in the first quarter.
- Junior Samantha Muller would snap the rally with a jumper and score the next seven points for the Lions. Senior Janel Moore would cap the quarter with a three-point shot to bring Molloy within five, 17-12, going into the second stanza.
- Rizzitelli and Moore would begin the second with a jumper each to cut the deficit to one, 17-16.
- After Adelphi hit a three-point shot to take a 20-16 lead, Rizzitelli and Moore would drain a jumper and a three-point basket to take its first lead of the game, 21-20, with 6:03 remaining in the first half.
- Over the next 5:30 of action, the Panthers would hold Molloy without a field goal and go on a 8-0 rally to take a 28-21 lead with under a minute to go in the second quarter.
- In the final 24 seconds of the half, Moore would sink a pair of free throws and junior Casey Campo would make a layup to send the Lions into halftime within three, 28-25.
- In the opening 1:46 of the three quarter, Adelphi put together a mini 7-0 rally to open a 10-point lead, 35-25.
- After Moore snapped the run with a jumper, junior Colleen McCullagh would hit a free throw and Rizzitelli would connect on a three to bring the Lions within six, 37-31, with 6:47 left in the third stanza.
- The squads would trade baskets over the next few minutes of play, but the home team on three straight field goals within a minute span to reestablish its double-digit lead, 48-33, and would take a 55-41 advantage into the fourth quarter.
- Campo would kick off the fourth stanza with a layup, but that is as close as they Lions would come for the remainder of the contest. Adelphi would open its lead to as much as 19 and hold Molloy to 25 percent shooting en route to victory.
