Men’s Soccer Falls at Queens; Earns No. 5 Seed in ECC Championship

Flushing, N.Y. – The Molloy men's soccer team concluded the regular season this afternoon, falling to the Knights of Queens College, 3-1, at Knights Field. The Lions enter the postseason 6-7-4 overall and 3-2-3 in East Coast Conference play and will be the fifth seed in the ECC Championship, while the Knights end the regular season 11-4-2 overall and 7-0-1 in league play, earning the top-seed in the postseason.

How it Happened
  • The Knights applied pressure in the opening 20 minutes totaling four shots with two coming on goal. Freshman Callum Hunt made two saves to keep the contest without a score.
  • The first chance of the contest for the Lions came in the 30th off a shot from freshman Charlie Morgan that went wide of target.
  • 1:12 later, the Knights threatened to crack the scoreboard, but Hunt denied the opportunity.
  • In the 42nd minute, Queens took a 1-0 lead following a goal from Harry Cooke.
  • The cardinal and white wasted no time with a response. 16 seconds later, sophomore Wilmer Flores sent a cross into the box and found a diving junior Matt Star who headed it into the back of the net to knot the contest at one, heading into halftime.
  • 2:39 into the second half, sophomore Steph Maurice looked to break the tie with a scoring chance but rang his shot off the cross bar.
  • In the 56th minute, the Knights had a chance to retake the lead, but a team save by the Lions kept the contest deadlocked at one.
  • The contest would turn into a possession battle as neither team would record a shot on target over the next 14 minutes of action.
  • Queens took the lead in the 72nd minute, 2-1, with Cooke netting his second goal of the afternoon.
  • Cooke would go on to net a hat trick in the 88th minute and the Knights would not allow the Lions to record another shot for the remainder of the contest, securing the victory, 3-1.
