Women’s Basketball Battles Against #12 Jefferson

Philadelphia, PA. – The Molloy women's basketball team wrapped up the Conference Challenge this afternoon falling to the 12th-ranked Jefferson University Rams, 68-63, inside Sorgenti Arena on the campus of Chestnut Hill College. The Lions move to 1-1 after the opening weekend, while the Rams improve to 2-0.
 
How it Happened
  • After Jefferson got off to an early 4-0 lead, senior Janel Moore sank a three-point basket to get the Lions on the board and within one, 4-3, three minutes into the game.
  • Both teams would trade baskets through the opening six minutes, but a three-point shot from junior Colleen McCullagh kept Molloy within two, 12-10.
  • The Rams would close the opening stanza on a 9-5 run to take a 21-15 lead into the second quarter.
  • Back-to-back layups from senior Samantha Muller and a free throw from McCullagh kept Molloy within striking distance, 25-20, with 6:06 left in the first half.
  • The cardinal and white would conclude the half on a 10-5 run, off four points from Muller and a three-point basket from juniors Rosa Rizzitelli and Sophia Yearwood to head into halftime all square at 30.
  • The Rams kicked off the second half with the first four points, but another three-point hoop from McCullagh shrunk the deficit to one, 34-33, 2:27 into the quarter.
  • 1:16 later, the cardinal and white took a two-point lead, 37-36, following a jumper from Moore.
  • Jefferson would put together an 11-2 rally over the next four minutes of action to take a 47-39 lead with 2:20 to go in the third stanza.
  • Junior Casey Campo and freshman Jamie Davneiro would sink baskets to conclude the quarter, keeping the Lions within seven, 50-43, heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Molloy scored five points in the opening 1:04 of the fourth stanza following a layup from Campo and a three-point shot from Rizzitelli to cut the deficit to two, 50-48.
  • The Rams responded with a 10-0 rally to separate themselves from the Lions, 58-48, with six minutes remaining.
  • The cardinal and white would not give him, answering with a mini 6-0 run to bring them back within two possessions, 58-54, with under three minutes to play.
  • The two squads would trade baskets for the remainder of the contest, with the Lions getting as close as three from the Rams with six seconds on the clock, but a pair of free throws in the late seconds by the Rams would solidify the victory, 68-63.
Top Performances
  • Muller paced the squad with 12 points.
  • McCullagh totaled 11 points shooting 66 percent (four-of-six) from the field and draining a pair of three-point baskets.
  • Campo added 10 points and led the team with six rebounds and three assists.
