Rizzitelli Collects Double-Double in Women’s Basketball Victory over Bridgeport

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy women's basketball team began its home portion of its schedule Thursday evening, picking up a 55-35 victory over the Purple Knights of the University of Bridgeport on Bob Houlihan Court. The Lions improve to 2-1 on the young campaign, while the Purple Knights move to 0-3.
 
How it Happened
  • Junior Casey Campo opened the scoring with the team's first four points to give Molloy a 4-3 lead one minute into the game.
  • The two squads would trade baskets over the next five minutes of action, but three free throws from junior Colleen McCullagh kept Molloy ahead, 9-8.
  • The Lions concluded the first stanza on a 8-2 run to take a 17-10 advantage into the second quarter.
  • Junior Rosa Rizzitelli netted the opening five points of the quarter for Molloy, extending the lead to double-figures, 22-12, with 5:03 remaining in the half.
  • A three-point basket from Bridgeport guard Harmony Earth-Wiley and a pair of free throws from Zahkiyyah Frazier, cut the road teams deficit to five, 22-17, with 3:41 to go in the first half.
  • The cardinal and white closed the first half on a mini 5-0 run to reestablish its 10-point lead, 27-17, going into halftime.
  • After going back and forth to start the third quarter, the Lions put together a 7-0 rally to open a 16-point lead, 36-20, with 6:40 left in the stanza.
  • The Lions would outscore the Purple Knights 20-8 in the third quarter to take an overwhelming, 47-25, heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Molloy would open its lead as large as 26, 54-28, in the final stanza and go on to clinch the victory, 55-35.
Top Performances
  • Rizzitelli totaled 12 points and secured a career-high 14 rebounds.
  • Senior Samantha Muller tallied 11 points and eight rebounds.
  • Campo and junior Sophia Yearwood added 10 points each.
  • McCullagh secured 12 rebounds while collecting eight points.
