Trio Of Goal Scorers Lead Women’s Soccer Past Bridgeport

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – With contributions from three different goal scorers, the Molloy women's soccer team defeated the Purple Knights of the University of Bridgeport, 3-0, Tuesday evening at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions improve to 4-4-1 on the season, while the Purple Knights move to 2-5-3 on the campaign.
 
How it Happened
  • The Lions were gifted an indirect free kick in the first 2:40 of the contest following an illegal touch from Bridgeport goalkeeper Angelina Griva. Senior Alessandra Borsellino took the free kick but shot it into the wall of defenders to record the games first shot.
  • From 13:11 through 17:15 of the first half, junior Mikaela Barriga generated three chances. Two shots were saved and the third was blocked, keeping the game scoreless.
  • The game would turn into a possession battle over the next 14 minutes, with the Lions dominating the possession while not allowing a single shot.
  • In the 32nd minute, freshman Jana Strait received the ball down the right flank and took it into the 18-yard box. The rookie crossed it to the back post and found a lunging Barriga who buried it to put Molloy on the board, 1-0.
  • In the last 10 minutes of the opening stanza Strait was looking to extend the lead to two goals, but neither of her shots would land on target sending the contest into halftime, 1-0.
  • After being held without a shot in the first half, Bridgeport came out in the second stanza with more aggression, totaling three chances in the opening 10 minutes.
  • Of the three chances, two were blocked and one went wide keeping the road team off the scoreboard.
  • The Purple Knights continued to look for the equalizer through the 61st minute. A shot from Leigh-Ann Ramsay forced sophomore Elyse Muñoz to make her first save of the contest to keep the Lions ahead.
  • The Purple Knights won a corner kick in the 74th minute. Following the corner a header on goal from Kristi Jazdzewski made Muñoz make her second save.
  • 1:14 later following a foul from the road team, Borsellino took a free kick from 45 yards away, sent it into the box and found the head of sophomore Madison Kennan who snuck it into the far post to extend the Molloy lead, 2-0.
  • Three minutes would go by before the Lions would net its third goal of the contest. Strait found sophomore Isabella Muro down the right side, who beat her defender and blasted a shot into the top left corner of the net to add an extra insurance goal, 3-0.
  • The cardinal and white would not allow another shot on goal for the remainder of the contest, solidifying the victory, 3-0.

  • Barriga collected her second goal of the season while leading the Lions with three shots on goal.
  • Muro netted her third goal of the campaign.
  • Keenan tallied her first goal of the season and the second of her career.
  • Strait dished out two assists while tallying three shots.
  • In goal, Muñoz made two saves to collect her third shutout of the season.
